If you spend time outdoors, knowing how to recognize poison ivy and poison oak can save you from a very uncomfortable rash. 🌿

Both plants contain urushiol, an oily substance that can trigger an itchy, red, sometimes blistering rash in people who are sensitive to it. The tricky part? You don’t necessarily need to directly touch the leaves to react. Urushiol can also get onto clothing, shoes, gardening tools, or even your pet’s fur and then transfer to your skin.

A classic reminder for poison ivy is “leaves of three, let it be”—but appearance can vary depending on the plant and season, so don’t rely on that phrase alone.

If you think you’ve come into contact with one, avoid scratching, wash exposed skin and clothing promptly, and keep an eye out for a developing rash.
