Honoring Juneteenth: Freedom, Dignity, and Economic Democracy
Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Juneteenth is a powerful reminder that freedom, justice, and opportunity have often been, at times elusive, hard-won, faced setbacks and that the work of creating a more equitable society continues.
As we reflect on the significance of this day, we are reminded that freedom is not only about legal rights. It is also about having access to economic opportunity, being treated with dignity and respect, and having the ability to participate fully in decisions that affect our lives and livelihoods.
These principles are deeply connected to the history and mission of Cooperative Home Care Associates.
CHCA was founded on a bold but simple belief: that quality jobs create quality care. At a time when home care workers—primarily women, people of color, and immigrants—were often undervalued despite providing essential services, CHCA set out to demonstrate that investing in workers benefits everyone. By creating pathways to ownership, training, career advancement, and shared success, CHCA challenged traditional assumptions about low-wage work and showed that workers deserve both respect and opportunity.
Today, as a worker-owned cooperative, we continue that mission. Ownership gives workers a voice, a stake in the organization's success, and the opportunity to build towards economic security for themselves and their families. In many ways, our cooperative model reflects the ongoing pursuit of the promise that Juneteenth represents not only freedom from barriers and exclusion, but the opportunity to build wealth, exercise self-determination, and participate in shaping a better future.
Our workforce reflects the diversity and strength of New York City. The women, people of color, immigrants, and allies who make up our cooperative bring extraordinary skill, compassion, resilience, and leadership to their work every day. Through their dedication, thousands of older adults and people with disabilities are able to live safely, independently, and with dignity in their homes and communities.
Juneteenth is both a celebration and a call to action. It invites us to honor those who struggle for freedom and equality while recommitting ourselves to building workplaces and communities where opportunity is shared more broadly and where every person's contributions are valued.
At CHCA, we know that economic democracy is not simply an idea, it is a core practice fundamental to who we are. Through worker ownership, mutual support, and our commitment to quality care, we continue to advance a vision of shared prosperity and dignity for all.
As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us take pride in the role we play in carrying forward that legacy and in building a future where opportunity, ownership, and respect are available to everyone.
Thank you for everything you do to make CHCA, our cooperative, and our communities stronger.
Happy Juneteenth.
