One of the most common - and least talked about - side effects of Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro is constipation. And it's not as simple as "drink more water."

Here's what's actually happening:

GLP-1 medications work by slowing your stomach and signaling fullness to your brain. But GLP-1 receptors exist throughout your entire digestive tract - including the colon. When the medication activates those receptors, it suppresses peristalsis: the coordinated muscle contractions that move waste through.

As a result, stool sits in the colon longer. More water gets absorbed from it. It becomes dry, compact, and hard to pass. Some people go days without a bowel movement. Others feel constantly bloated but can't find relief.

What helps - and what doesn't:

Stimulant laxatives offer short-term relief but don't restore the underlying motility function. Over time they can create dependency.

Or that roughly 70% of your immune system lives in and around the gut wall?

Most people think of gut health as a digestion issue. But the research tells a very different story. Your gut is directly connected to your mood, your skin, your immune response, your joints, and your energy levels. Your gut is working harder than you know, and most of the time, it doesn't complain until things are really backed up.

Stress. Rushed meals. Not enough movement. City life in general. All of it slows your digestive system down in ways that fiber and water alone can't always fix.
