Stay-Focused

Stay-Focused Stay-Focused offers a unique, transformational learning experience to disabled teens and young adults

Stay-Focused offers a once in a lifetime experience in which we invite teens and young adults with disabilities to Grand Cayman with the opportunity to become PADI Certified SCUBA Divers. We work closely with instructors who have experience with disabled divers to create innovative solutions for each diver we work with- no matter how they move. Each summer, we run programs to support both new frie

nds to Stay-Focused, as well as those returning for their reunion trips. In our first time diver programs, we spend a portion of the trip in the classroom and the pool to learn and master the skills required to dive. Then, we take the group to the ocean to demonstrate and test what they've learned to go through the certification process. Our dives are supplemented with ocean conservation education programs, beach afternoons, goal setting, local wildlife education, and team-building activities. By the end of program, we spend time with each group to discuss what the experience has meant to them, set our goals for the upcoming year, and gear up to meet again. On reunion trip, participants return with their original group to refresh their skills, dive new sites, and learn more about the local environment through Jean-Michelle Cousteau's Ambassadors of the Environment program held on island. Stay-Focused has also grown to prioritize community awareness as well as leadership development. Starting in 2014, we implemented our Caymanian Internship Program to build awareness in Cayman for the potential of all persons with disabilities. Our interns have learned a lot from their experiences and serve as ambassadors for Stay-Focused. Our mentorship program was started in 2007, and we have been fortunate to have as many as 13 alumni involved over the years. Our mentors represent the emerging leadership in our organization and are a tremendous asset in assisting our divers, in and out of the water, serving as role models, building awareness in the disability community, and promoting the work we do in enhancing the lives of teens with disabilities. Our organization is essentially a program that enhances and enriches the lives of teens and adults with disabilities, using SCUBA diving as the vehicle for personal growth. Hence, the development of all of our participants is at the core of our agenda, starting with our first divers back in 2004. The discussion of critical aspects of leadership (including self-reliance, responsibility for others, clarity of purpose, and leaving a legacy for those who come after us), has always been a standard part of the Stay-Focused curriculum. At the root of what we do- we aim to empower, foster independence, confidence, and celebrate all we can do with disability.

And just like that, our newest crew of certified divers has wrapped up their week in Cayman! 🤿🌊

We finished the trip with our final boat dives where Lone Star Ledges was clearly a fan favorite, and the crew made the most of every minute underwater. After six days of learning, diving, laughing, and becoming a pretty tight-knit group, it was definitely bittersweet to take our final breaths underwater. From their first day in the classroom to those first nervous breaths in the pool and finally getting out on the ocean and boat, this crew has come such a long way in just one week. We’re so proud of everything they accomplished and all the memories they made along the way. 💙

After our final dives we enjoyed lunch Bonny Moon Beach Club before having our final dinner together The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman filled with many laughs as we presented legacy logs! Then it was time to say goodbye to Cayman and head home. Everyone made it back safely late last night, and while we’re already missing the island, we’re so grateful for this crew and everyone who made the week possible. Until the next adventure, we’ll miss you guys!

The crew officially completed their first boat dives today! We headed out right from the Ritz with Red Sail Sports, Grand Cayman for two dives at Aquarium South and Pradise Reef and the Oro Verde wreck, and Cayman did not disappoint. The crew spotted stingrays, pufferfish, parrotfish, blue tang, and plenty of other marine life along the way! 🐠

After getting back to shore, we headed over to Ragazzi Ristorante & Pizzeria for lunch before making our way back to the hotel to work on Legacy Logs and get some much-needed rest. Then it was off to Camana Bay for dinner and gelato at Brooklyn 🍝🍦We squeezed in a quick pool dip and watched some Stranger Things before calling it a night. One more day of diving tomorrow, and we’re ready to make the most of it!!

Big smiles for day 4! The first ocean dives are officially in the books, and this crew is officially certified!!! 🎉 Everyone completed their final skills with ease despite today’s swell at the Sunset House sea pool. From there, we headed out for their first two ocean dives and got to experience some of Cayman’s incredible underwater life, including plenty of squid, huge barracuda, sea slugs, pufferfish, and even a stingray! 🦑🐡

After wrapping up at Sunset House, we headed over to Bonny Moon Beach Club for lunch before making our way back to the Ritz to get started on their Legacy Logs. Of course, there was still time for some air hockey and ping pong before dinner at Rackams WaterFront, where we made our usual stop to feed the tarpon! 🐟After their first taste of ocean diving, this crew is ready for what’s next. We’re trading the shore for the boat this morning and heading out for some incredible dives! Huge congratulations to our newest group of certified divers! 🤿🌊

This crew has officially completed their confined water skills in the pool and are ready to head to the ocean! They crushed all their skills on the second day in the pool including a surface snorkel swim and fully removing their mask and replacing it.

After a great final pool session yesterday morning, we had a delicious lunch with our lovely host Macabuca TikiBar, complete with ice cream sandwiches of course! Since this crew flew through their skills, we had a free afternoon at the beach filled with snorkeling, and piling everyone into the mesh floats for some games, wrestling matches, ect. We then showered and recharged before heading over to our wonderful hosts at the The Westin Grand Cayman for a family style dinner where we enjoyed the sunset and visiting cat! The group is on their way to Sunset House for our first ocean dive as we speak, so stay tuned!🤿🐠

Day Two is officially in the books, and this crew really hit the ground running! We started our first full day off in the classroom with our instructors to go over the PADI e-learning course, learning about the fundamentals before putting it all into practice in the pool this afternoon with our wonderful instructors. We then headed back to St. June for lunch before we kicked off our first confined water skills session, getting hands-on with our gear, working on buoyancy and regulator skills, and starting to get comfortable underwater. There’s a lot to take in on that first pool session, and this crew absolutely crushed it! After wrapping up in the pool, everyone headed to the game room for some serious ping pong competition before heading to Camana Bay for a delicious dinner at Abacus, LOCO, Mexican Cocina & Tequila Bar, and Karoo. Huge thank you to all three for taking such great care of our crew! And somehow, the day still wasn’t over. After dinner, we hit the basketball courts before ending the night with a few makeovers and plenty of laughs. 🏀💄Looking forward to seeing this crew back in the pool tomorrow!

And just like that… we have another crew on island!!!🏝️Everyone made it to Cayman smoothly and wasted absolutely no time getting right to the important stuff. After touching down at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman the crew headed straight to lunch at St. Junes before immediately making their way to the beach and pool for the afternoon, where they even saw their first stingray! This crew became fast friends, heading straight to the pool again after a delicious dinner back at St. Junes, before sitting outside chatting endlessly for the night when their mentors finally had to break it up for bed. Everyone can’t wait to trade the beach chairs for classroom time and pool skills tomorrow, one step closer to getting everyone on their first dive! 🤿🧜‍♀️

If we’re coasting on vibes, the Gooba’s wrapped up their trip in perfect form 👌 We had the best time on our final boat dives and it should be known- we out-mogged everyone in the ocean that day. Our final dives were fantastic, and goofy, and fun and full of exciting moments. This group has been immediate friends from day one and stayed strong all the way through. We wrapped up our day with Legacy Legs and a fantastic dinner from Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman 🌊 We can’t wait to reunite with this squad and we’re so grateful for all of the crew on this trip. Looking forward to next summer and will miss the Scuba Gooba’s a ton! 🤿

The line to get to our first boat dive was stacked, the Gooba’s were ready to hit the water! We had the morning off to get ready for an afternoon of diving. After an amazing lunch at one of our island favorites, Ragazzi Ristorante & Pizzeria (where we loaded up on pasta, pizza, and as much bread as our bodies could hold), we made our way back to the beach to line up for our first boat dive. 🛥️ This crew wasted no time in knocking out their skills and promptly spotting a nurse shark 🦈 We also learned what a Tiger Tail sea cucumber was, which the group categorized as generally unsettling. We visited the Oro Verde, as well as Aquarium North where the group kept eyes out for the infamous Killer Puffer. 🐡 After some amazing dives, the group headed back to slay at Caymana Bay to head up the tower for a photo (where we obviously out-mogged everyone else), and then to for dinner. The day ended with gelato, the best team bus vibes that Cayman has ever seen, and a game of mafia. Day two of boat vibes get even better, and we can’t wait to share 👌🤿

The best day is without a doubt when it’s finally time to hit the reef! 🌊Stay-Focused’s first ocean stop on every trip is a shore dive at Sunset House, and we’re so endlessly grateful for what fantastic hosts they are. The team they send to guide and dive alongside of us help with everything from education, to dive briefings, to gear, to diving alongside of us with a slate to write down all the new fish we’re seeing. From squid, to rays, to an eel, lion fish and endless sea slugs- our first ocean dive did not disappoint.

After our dives, we went to lunch and began working on our Legacy Logs. No spoilers, but this years are promising to be pretty impressive! We had a fantastic dinner at Rackams Waterfront - where of course we fed the tarpon - and as usual, ended the day with a few games of Mafia. We have some amazing underwater photography coming soon of these dives, but for now - enjoy the many glamour shots of Sunset House in front of the sea we’re so grateful to call home 🌅🌊
