Did you know that vision problems are one of the most common symptoms after a concussion?

Up to 50% of the brain’s pathways are involved in vision, which means even a mild brain injury can disrupt how your eyes and brain work together.

There are 4 common visual symptoms after concussion that many people overlook—but can seriously affect reading, focus, work, and daily life.

These include problems like:
• Eye strain or reading issues
• Eye Discomfort, Dryness, and Irritation
• Double vision
• Light sensitivity

The good news? These symptoms are often treatable once they’re properly diagnosed.

I dive deeper into the science, symptoms, and what to do about them in Episode 65 of The Eye-Q Podcast™, and I also wrote a full blog post on this topic.

Most people think eye exams are just for glasses 🤓

But a comprehensive eye exam can detect over 200 diseases throughout the body.

Because the eye is the only place where doctors can directly see:

• blood vessels
• nerves
• brain connections
.. without surgery.

During an eye exam, we can detect signs of:

• diabetes
• high blood pressure
• stroke risk
• brain tumors
• autoimmune disease
• medication toxicity

Sometimes patients learn they have a serious health condition for the first time during an eye exam.

Your eyes truly are a window into your overall health.

Save this post so you remember to schedule your next eye exam.

Ever flip your eyelid and see this? 👀

These are giant papillae…

Big, bumpy inflammatory changes on the inside of the upper eyelid.

Most common causes include:

✅ Contact lens irritation — especially overwear, poor cleaning, sleeping in lenses, or old lenses

✅ Allergies — seasonal allergies, eye rubbing, chronic itching

✅ Mechanical irritation — sutures, prosthetics, exposed bumps, or anything repeatedly rubbing the lid

✅ Vernal/atopic eye disease — more intense allergic inflammation, often with severe itching

Symptoms can feel like:
• Itching
• Mucus/stringy discharge
• Contact lens intolerance
• Foreign body sensation
• Blurry vision that comes and goes

The big message: don’t just keep pushing through with contacts if your eyes are irritated.

Take a break from lenses and see your eye doctor…

because the treatment depends on the cause.

Would you have known to flip the lid? 👁️

Women are more likely to develop dry eye, cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and autoimmune eye diseases - but rarely told why.

Hormones, immune activity, and longevity all influence how women’s eyes age and respond to stress.

When symptoms show up in midlife, they’re often framed as “normal.”

But common doesn’t mean insignificant.

If you wish someone had explained this to you sooner, comment HORMONES and I’ll send a simple guide every woman should have.

Also, share with a woman you love, so they too can better cope with vision changes as they age.

This is a giant retinal tear… seen during surgery. 👁️⚠️

A giant retinal tear is a full-thickness retinal break extending 90 degrees or more around the retina.

Once the retina tears, it can rapidly detach — putting vision at immediate risk.

Patients may notice:
▫️Flashes of light
▫️Sudden floaters
▫️A curtain or shadow in the vision
▫️Sudden vision loss

Risk factors can include:
▪️High myopia
▪️Trauma
▪️Prior eye surgery
▪️Inherited vitreoretinal disorders

This is why new flashes and floaters should NEVER be ignored.

Retinal surgery is incredibly delicate — the goal is to reattach and stabilize the retina before permanent vision loss occurs.

Your retina is neural tissue. Once damaged, recovery may be limited.

One pupil suddenly became HUGE after a dental procedure… 😳👁️

This is anisocoria (unequal pupil size) that occurred after dental anesthesia.

Yes — certain dental injections can temporarily affect the nerves that control the pupil and eyelid.

How does this happen?
▫️Local anesthetic can occasionally spread into nearby vascular or nerve pathways
▫️This may affect the sympathetic or parasympathetic nerves connected to the eye
▫️The result can be a dilated pupil, blurry vision, eyelid droop, double vision, or difficulty focusing

In most cases, it’s temporary and resolves as the anesthetic wears off over hours.

BUT… sudden anisocoria should NEVER automatically be ignored.

🚨 Seek urgent medical attention if it’s accompanied by:
▪️Severe headache
▪️Eye pain
▪️Double vision
▪️Facial weakness
▪️Droopy eyelid
▪️Confusion or neurologic symptoms
▪️Persistent symptoms that don’t improve

Not every unequal pupil is “just the dentist.” Sometimes the eye is warning us about something much more serious.

I’m curious- have you ever seen this happen before? Comment below 👇🏼

Why do the eyes look so red? 👀

This is oculocutaneous albinism (OCA), a genetic condition that affects the production of melanin pigment in the skin, hair, and eyes. But the changes go far beyond appearance.

Key eye findings can include:
▫️Reduced pigmentation of the iris and retina
▫️Light sensitivity (photophobia)
▫️Nystagmus (involuntary eye movements)
▫️Decreased visual acuity
▫️Foveal hypoplasia (underdevelopment of the central retina)
▫️Strabismus or poor depth perception
▫️Transillumination defects of the iris

Because melanin plays an important role in visual system development, the connection between the eyes and brain can also develop differently in OCA.

Important reminder: albinism is a spectrum. Vision and physical features can vary significantly from person to person.
