Congratulations to CVR Graduate Research Assistant Lucy Prout!

Congratulations to PhD student Lucy Prout, the 2026 recipient of the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences’ Victimology section!

“Receiving this award means so much to me because it reflects the importance of reimagining responses to intimate and sexual violence beyond the criminal legal system,” Lucy said.

Her research aims to:
- Understand the root causes of intimate and sexual violence
- Strengthen community-based responses that don’t involve jail or prison
- Prevent harm before it even occurs

“I believe that those most impacted should not only be the focus of research but should also actively shape it,” said Lucy. By collaborating with survivors and communities, her scholarship explores new ways to approach accountability, repair, and healing.

To provide an alternate path to help the victims of domestic violence and sexual assault heal and hold harm-doers accountable, the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women (OVW) has launched a pilot sites program focused on restorative practices. And we're proud to share that a team led by NYU Silver School of Social Work Research Professor Briana Barocas has received a 5-year, $8 million award from OVW to evaluate the 11 sites funded through the program.

This crucial evaluation of restorative practices will explore key questions around violence prevention, recovery, and community safety. This work is particularly significant as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
