NYU Langone Orthopedics proudly hosts events throughout the year to help students across all levels gain exposure to the field of orthopedic surgery as a future career:

🦴On Saturday, May 9th, Toni McLaurin, Professor and Chief of our Bellevue Hospital Orthopedic Service welcomed 40 NYC public high school students for the Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s High School Scholars Program. Our residents and faculty were on hand as volunteers and mentors for this special group of scholars.

🦴Students from United Charter High Schools and the Pre-Med Academy at John Adams High School explored careers in orthopedics through lectures, videos, and hands on activities. They practiced fixing fractures, reading X rays, and even casting, with each of them placing a cast on a partner’s finger with the bonus of a souvenir cast to take home!

💫We hope we inspired the next generation of orthopedic professionals!

Welcome to our new "Case of the Month" series which highlights complex cases that reflect NYU Langone Orthopedics’ commitment to innovation, multidisciplinary collaboration, and durable patient outcomes—with a continued focus on long-term results:

▶ This month's case features a patient of Dr. William Macaulay, Chief of our Adult Reconstructive Surgery Division. This case spans more than two decades following the patient's primary total hip arthroplasty.

▶After 23 years of excellent function, the patient developed instability driven by spinopelvic stiffness. Revision surgery addressed the instability with modern technology, while preserving a well-fixed cemented femoral stem that remained stable at 24 years.

▶This case underscores the durability of established techniques alongside advances in imaging, materials, and surgical planning—and reinforces the increasingly achievable goal of a lifelong hip replacement.

NYU Langone Orthopedics thanks MaCalus V. Hogan MD, MBA, who delivered the Melvin Jahss Foot & Ankle Lecture at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital on April 16. Dr. Hogan is the David Silver Professor and Chair of the UPMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of the UPMC Orthopaedic Surgery Service Line. Additionally, Dr. Hogan currently holds the position of director at the Foot and Ankle Injury Research (FAIR) group.

The lecture is named in honor of the late Melvin Jahss, MD, alumnus and former Chief of the Foot and Ankle Division. Dr. Jahss was a pioneer in the field of foot and ankle surgery and one of the founders of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AFOAS). He trained more than 350 residents and numerous fellows, many of whom went on to direct residency and fellowship training programs in foot and ankle surgery worldwide. For his legacy as a clinician, researcher and educator AFOAS recognized him with the Humana Award for Excellence in 1990. The Department established a lecture in his honor for his life-long dedication to advancing the care of patients with foot and ankle disorders.
