Want stronger shoulders? Earn the weight before you press it.
Today my client hit 5 single-arm overhead presses with 50 lbs on each side.
But we didn’t start with the press.
We started by carrying 54 lb kettlebells in each hand.
Why?
Because before I ask someone to press a heavy weight overhead, I want their body to become comfortable holding and controlling that kind of load.
First, we build the grip.
We build the spine.
We build the posture.
And most importantly, we build trust, safety and confidence under load.
Then we start asking questions:
Can you hold the weight?
Can you carry it?
Can you get it safely into the rack position?
Can you control it at the shoulder?
And finally…
Can you put it overhead?
We went single arm first — 5 right, 5 left — using the free hand as a spotting hand when needed.
That gives you another layer of safety and confidence while your body learns the movement.
Once both sides can own the weight independently, then we can start thinking about putting 50 lbs in both hands and pressing together.
Strength doesn’t have to be rushed.
Build tolerance → build trust → build confidence → then build strength.
Give the body enough successful experiences under load and eventually it starts saying:
“I’ve got this.”
That’s how we Train Better Faster. 💪
