A great example of how strong infection prevention practices can make a real difference in patient outcomes.

A study involving NICUs, including Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Oregon, found that enhanced infection control measures such as improved hand hygiene, health screening, masking during high-risk periods, and careful visitor policies were associated with a significant reduction in hospital-acquired viral infections among newborns.

The findings highlight the importance of maintaining a culture of safety, teamwork, and evidence-based infection prevention to protect our most vulnerable patients and improve quality of care. (OHSU News)

A major milestone in HIV prevention was announced after the FDA approved Yeztugo (lenacapavir), the first and only HIV prevention injection that provides protection for up to 6 months with just two doses a year.

The approval was based on Phase 3 PURPOSE 1 and PURPOSE 2 studies, where more than 99.9% of participants remained HIV negative during the trials. Experts say this long-acting option could help improve adherence and expand access to HIV prevention for people who struggle with taking daily medication.

The CDC has also recognized lenacapavir as an important new PrEP option, highlighting its potential to strengthen HIV prevention efforts and reduce new infections worldwide.

This is another important step forward in public health, prevention, and access to care.

The CDC has issued recommendations for clinicians following a cluster of Andes virus infections linked to the M/V Hondius cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean. Andes virus is a hantavirus found in parts of South America and is the only hantavirus known to spread from person to person, although this type of transmission is considered rare and usually requires prolonged close contact.

As of May 15, the WHO reported 10 cases, including 3 deaths. The virus can cause hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), a serious respiratory illness.

The CDC is advising clinicians to consider Andes virus infection in patients with symptoms compatible with hantavirus infection who were aboard the M/V Hondius cruise ship or had close contact with someone associated with the outbreak. Providers are also encouraged to immediately notify public health authorities of suspected cases and consult CDC specialists regarding diagnostic testing.

The advisory also reminds clinicians to consider other hantavirus infections in patients with rodent exposure, especially during the spring and summer months, when contact with rodent-infested environments may increase.

This outbreak highlights the importance of early recognition, exposure assessment, infection prevention measures, and close coordination with public health agencies.

Testing available for patients with suspected hantavirus infection to include Andes virus.

Health officials are closely monitoring the Ebola outbreak affecting parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda. The outbreak involves the Sudan strain of Ebola virus, which currently has no approved vaccine, making rapid public health response especially important.

Here are some key points about the outbreak:
• Ebola spreads through direct contact with infected body fluids or contaminated materials
• Early symptoms may resemble other illnesses, making diagnosis challenging
• Healthcare workers remain at high risk during outbreaks
• Rapid isolation, contact tracing, and infection prevention measures are critical to limiting spread
• Experimental vaccines and treatments are still being studied
• Political instability, population movement, and limited healthcare resources continue to complicate response efforts

The situation highlights the importance of strong infection prevention practices, early detection, community education, and global collaboration in controlling emerging infectious diseases.

A concerning Ebola outbreak is unfolding in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with associated cases in Uganda. For many Americans, the risk remains low.

F***l incontinence is often viewed as a nursing care issue, but this article highlights how it can also become a major infection prevention concern — especially in ICUs and other high-risk health care settings.

When stool is not properly contained, pathogens such as C. difficile and Candida auris can spread to surfaces, equipment, linens, and even health care workers’ hands during routine care. The article discusses how repeated environmental contamination may contribute to ongoing transmission despite strict infection prevention protocols.

It also raises an important point: effective stool management is not only about patient comfort and skin protection, but also about reducing environmental contamination, protecting staff, and strengthening infection prevention efforts at the bedside.

Discover how poor f***l incontinence management in hospitals increases the spread of dangerous pathogens and severely undermines infection prevention efforts.

Candida auris continues to be a growing concern in healthcare facilities because of its ability to spread easily, survive on surfaces, and resist multiple antifungal treatments. A recent article highlights the importance of breaking the chain of transmission through early identification, proper isolation precautions, environmental cleaning, hand hygiene, and effective disinfection practices.

The article also emphasizes the value of rapid diagnostic testing in helping healthcare teams quickly identify colonized patients and prevent outbreaks before they spread to vulnerable populations. Infection prevention remains critical in protecting both patients and healthcare workers from emerging multidrug-resistant organisms.

Candida auris continues to challenge infection prevention programs worldwide as cases rise across health care settings and multidrug resistance limits treatment options. In this article, Ayaz Majid, PhD, director of product management at Diasorin, explores why rapid molecular diagnostics are becomin...

A large international study is shedding new light on why so many newborns die from infections in low-resource settings. Researchers found that infections played a role in nearly half of neonatal deaths studied across parts of Africa and South Asia, with drug-resistant bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii among the most common pathogens identified.

The findings also showed that many of these deaths may be preventable through stronger infection prevention practices, earlier diagnosis, better maternal and newborn care, and improved antibiotic strategies. The study highlights the importance of surveillance, hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and access to quality healthcare in protecting vulnerable newborns.

A powerful reminder that infection prevention continues to save lives — especially during the most fragile first days of life.

The study analyzed more than 2,600 neonatal deaths across multiple countries and emphasized the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance in neonatal sepsis.

The deaths of newborns in low-resource settings have long been obscured by a fundamental diagnostic problem: clinicians rarely know which pathogen killed

A new study from Germany suggests that consistent hand hygiene alone may be just as effective as adding routine gloves and gowns in preventing certain drug-resistant bloodstream infections in NICUs outside of outbreak situations. Researchers found no significant difference in infection rates, while reducing unnecessary disposable PPE could also lower healthcare costs and waste.

The findings reinforce what infection prevention professionals have emphasized for years — proper hand hygiene remains one of the most important strategies in reducing healthcare-associated infections and limiting the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

A clinical trial in Germany finds hand hygiene alone is noninferior to hand hygiene plus gloves and gowns for preventing bloodstream infections in newborns colonized with drug-resistant bacteria.

Hantavirus may be rare, but it can become life-threatening very quickly. Early symptoms often resemble the flu, including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, and headache, which can make early recognition difficult. In severe cases, the infection can progress rapidly and affect the lungs, leading to serious breathing problems.

The virus is mainly linked to exposure to rodent urine, droppings, or saliva, especially when contaminated dust becomes airborne. Prevention remains essential — proper cleaning methods, ventilation, and avoiding exposure to rodent-contaminated areas can help reduce risk.

A good reminder that even microscopic exposures can have major health consequences, and that awareness and prevention continue to play a critical role in public health.
