Takamichi lighting 儚い, hakanai, for the first time. The word means fleeting, the kind of beauty that matters because it doesn’t last, which felt like the only possible name for a candle made with Stylus and their sanctuary for the ephemeral arts. Godzilla Day is coming
Every November 3rd, Japan celebrates Godzilla Day, the anniversary of the day in 1954 when a radioactive monster first came ashore in Tokyo cinemas. This year Toho is marking it properly: Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the Oscar-winning Minus One, opens in Japan on the 3rd and reaches American theaters on November 6th.
We prepared the only way a shop like ours can, which is with stationery. New on our shelves are three sets of rubber stamps designed by Toho Co., the studio that has looked after Godzilla for seventy-two years. They’re drawn in fine line work, cut in high-definition rubber in Tokyo and mounted on wood, and the detail survives all the way down to the dorsal spines.
They came in a single delivery and won’t be reordered, so when they’re gone, they’re gone, and Godzilla goes back to sea, as he always does.
