Clips & Podcasts on Instagram: The American Council on Science and health was founded in 1978 by a group of scientists who had become concerned that many important public policies related to health and the environment did not have a sound scientific basis. These scientists created the organization to add reason and balance to debates about public health issues and to bring common sense views to the public.

Why Weight Loss Drugs Might Not Work for You

Weight-loss jabs are the latest craze for shedding a few pounds. Their effect has been dramatic with drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide) causing users to lose up to 15% of their body fat on average.

Semaglutide, which is a glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1 receptor agonist drug), mimics the action of a natural gut hormone which is released after we eat.

“Truly evil” FDA rejection of gene therapy overturned after Trump official ousted

A gene therapy for Huntington’s disease has a new path toward approval from the Food and Drug Administration after the ouster of several Trump officials, particularly Vinay Prasad, who rejected the therapy in a shocking move one former FDA official called “truly evil.”

Huntington’s disease is an inherited condition that typically strikes in middle age and causes nerve cells in the brain to gradually break down. There are currently no treatments for the disease, and many afflicted die in their 50s and 60s.

Rigor or Ruin

Hold on to your hat. This is a long but rewarding one. In which Lawrence Eppard bludgeons bad and biased sociology with the hope, albeit a slim one, of saving the field from itself. The hope is not ridiculous because he is a sociologist and this article exemplifies empirically oriented scientific sociology at its best. Yes, Virginia, scientific sociology is a thing and some still practice it.

Moms Podcast Takeover: A Pro-Science Parents Guide to Instagram, Pt. 1

Social media can feel like a minefield for parents. Every scroll brings a fresh wave of chemical scares, "toxic" warnings or the latest must-try health fad—if you want to be a "good mom," that is. This week on the Science Dispatch podcast, two ACSH moms step into the host seats: video reporter Ana Dolaskie and science teacher Desiree English. They push back against the fearmongering and offer evidence-based guidance to help parents navigate Instagram (and the rest of the internet) with confidence instead of anxiety.

Is “Better for You” Good Enough? MAHA, Big Food, and the Politics of Incremental Reform

The debate MAHA sparks over food is whether incremental reform can improve public health within the existing food system or merely help corporations preserve it under a new health-conscious label. MAHA’s frustration with Secretary Kennedy’s limited regulatory achievements reflects a broader question: can political power force structural change, or will it be absorbed into another round of corporate adaptation?

Dirty Soda, Dirty Numbers

If you did not grow up in Utah, the phrase “dirty soda” sounds, at best, intriguing and, at worst, like a fast track to an upset stomach. If you did, it sounds like a perfectly ordinary Tuesday afternoon at the local soda shop.

Two years, 2 million words: How a brain implant transformed an ALS patient’s life

For the past six years, Casey Harrell’s life has felt like a slow-motion car crash. At 42, he began to lose his voice to the neurodegenerative disease ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. His world shrank as his ability to sing to his young daughter, give a presentation for work or tell a joke eroded.
