Celebrating National Women’s Physician’s day in the midst of Black History Month! 🙌🏾 Grateful to work alongside incredible women physicians in the US and abroad. Sharing some special moments from a mission trip to Tanzania last summer coordinated by -a NGO founded by a fellow sista doc; Pediatric ER physician, Dr. Ashley Serrette. We not only got to take care of sick children, but also mentor and teach local medical students and trainees. So proud of the compassion, excellence and heart that women bring to medicine every day!

Yesterday many of you likely noticed the darkened sky and smell in the air. It’s incredible to know that wildfires raging in Canada can have an effect not only here in the Northeast but as far south as the Carolinas. According to one air quality tracker, NYC at one point yesterday had the worst air quality of any major city worldwide. While it has improved somewhat today; various at quality trackers still measure at an “unhealthy level”. Wildfire smoke causes concern because it contains fine particulate matter than can go into lungs but also enter the bloodstream. People with underlying respiratory conditions like asthma are at a higher risk.

So here are some tips to keep your family safe:
1. If you have air filters/purifiers in your home, make sure you have recently changed the filter and turn it on.
2. Keep all windows closed.
3. Minimize unnecessary outdoor activities. If you can take the subway instead of a long walk then do so.
4. If you are outside, consider wearing a mask.
5. Change clothes and rinse off once inside for the day.

My thoughts are with everyone in direct threat of these wildfires including the firefighters and other emergency response personnel who are risking their lives to keep their communities safe.

In honor of Black History Month, I’m highlighting Jane Cooke Wright, MD (1919-2013).

Dr. Wright worked with her father at the Cancer Research Foundation in Harlem; an organization he founded in 1948. (Her father, Dr. Louis Wright was one of the first Black graduates from Harvard Medical School.) They researched chemotherapy drugs which was mostly experimental at the time.

In 1952, she became director of the Foundation at the age of 33. She created innovative techniques for testing the affects of cancer drugs using patient tissue instead of lab mice. I’m 1964, President Johnson appointed her to the President’s commission on Heart Disease, Cancer and Stroke. In ‘67 she was named a professor of surgery, head of the Cancer chemotherapy department at New York University Center and associate dean at New York Medical College, her alma mater. 🙌🏾✊🏾

Today kicks off Black Breastfeeding Week! (August 25-August 31). It is also the 10th anniversary with the theme: 10 years, A New Foundation.

It’s a time to celebrate and learn within our community.

A successful breastfeeding relationship involves helping parents to achieve their goals, however they choose to define them. It takes resources, education and support from the community!

I was happy to contribute to this article that discusses the historical challenges and disparities that contribute to lower BF rates in the Black community and what we can do to support families.

Did you know that the National Su***de Prevention Lifeline launched a new 3-digit number: 988. Dialing this number will connect you free of charge to mental health crisis counselors no matter where you live in the US.

The previous long number to reach the lifeline 1-800-273-TALK, will remain operational during the expansion to 988. You can also send text messages to the 3 digit number!

Once you call you will have a conversation with a mental health crisis counselor. If they feel further intervention is needed, they can connect the caller to a local mobile crisis team for further assistance.

I think this is an excellent idea and hopefully will make it a little easier to get help if you or someone you know is struggling with mental health concerns. Normalize seeking health-you can also talk with friends, loved ones, school and your physician.

This past weekend I had a wonderful time participating at the Essence Festival in New Orleans. I was honored to be on a panel with two amazing women and . Our topic was “Discussing Healthcare Decisions and Addressing the Ongoing Challenges of COVID-19”. I shared my perspective on navigating the pandemic as a physician and discussed the importance of getting vaccinated. I encourage everyone to continue these conversations with your family/friends and always seek out your healthcare professional for guidance in making medical decisions.
