Gift of Life International Our mission is to provide lifesaving cardiac treatment to children in need from developing countries Gift of Life helps children in two ways.

First, we may arrange for them to be flown to the United States where a volunteer team of medical professionals performs the necessary life-saving surgery. Alternately, we may arrange for Gift of Life affiliated hospitals, medical centers and healthcare professionals throughout the world to treat them. The latter practice reduces the need for extensive travel for our children and their families.

Aminta Paz is the local psychologist at the Social Security Hospital in San Pedro Sula, Honduras!

Last week, she worked closely with Paola Flores to provide workshops, learning opportunities, and toolsets for parents, children, and hospital staff to better cope with the stress and anxiety that surrounds congenital heart disease and open heart surgery. Paola and Amy were present during all stages of each of the patients’ stays in the hospital to help them feel more safe and comfortable with their situations. This work also helps to build stronger connections between patients, their families, and medical staff. ❤️‍🩹

Our week in Honduras has come to an end with 8 little Honduran hearts operated on thanks to our partnerships with HeartGift Foundation and Club Rotario Ulua. ❤️‍🩹

Honduras is our newest Core program. We first visited the Social Security Hospital in San Pedro Sula in 2019, but, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our work there was delayed until 2022. Now, our strategic approach is to conduct training visits to Honduras 3-4 times a year! A unique aspect to this program is that each year, one of these visits is led by our Salvadoran team joined by teams coordinated by HeartGift and Gift of Life International!

Our goal for this year is to see over 60 children treated through this program while the local team is empowered to independently care for more children in the future. đź©ş

Paola Flores is hard at work in Honduras! Throughout the week she will be working with the children who will have their little hearts healed in the coming days. Paola will help the children understand their heart diseases and surgery through medical play.

During medical play, Paola uses a teddy bear to explain the children’s heart conditions and will perform “surgery” on the bear with the children. This play helps the children understand that though what is happening may be scary or uncomfortable, it is being done to help them and they will feel better in the end!

Paola’s work is incredibly important on helping these kiddos feel more safe and calm during their stays in the hospital. ❤️‍🩹

This week we are back healing little hearts in Honduras! Joining us this week is Paola Flores. Paola leads our humanized care program at Gift of Life International.

“Humanized care is the psychological work with people who are around a child with cardiopathy. So, we work with medical professionals, especially the local ones, and with the children and their families," Paola told us.

Throughout the week, Paola will host workshops for local medical professionals, children, and their parents in Honduras. The workshops for medical professionals will focus on personal sensitivity, communication tools, and medical play to help them interact better with patients and their families, but mental health care as well. The workshops for children receiving their heart healing care and those children’s parents will focus more on explaining what surgery the child is having, what medications they will be on, and why certain procedures and avenues of care are done in the way that they are.
