What does the research actually say about IBS and hypnotherapy?

Gastroenterologist Dr Stephanie Moleski breaks down the largest randomized controlled trial of Nerva to date in adults with IBS, comparing it against the exact same program without the hypnotherapy.

In the full episode, she goes further into the findings, and what they mean for the people over 65 the trials usually leave out.

Nerva is a gut-brain therapy program that helps you manage digestive symptoms. No drugs, no diets.

Nearly a third of IBS patients have been told their condition was “all in their head.”

A great recent piece in GI & Hepatology News, the AGA’s official newspaper, by two Northwestern physicians on the behavioral health gap in disorders of gut-brain interaction. They describe how digital therapeutics can bring brain-gut behavior therapy to patients who can’t get to a GI health psychologist, or who are held back by cost and time.

Wonderful to see them refer to both Nerva and our peer-reviewed research. In their words: “In one trial, 81% of patients (compared with 63% of controls) achieved clinically meaningful improvement in IBS symptom scores after program completion.”

“Endometriosis is not the same as pelvic pain.”

You can 100% have endo and zero pelvic pain. You can have terrible pelvic pain and no endo.

There’s overlap, but it’s not complete, and they’re not the same thing. And that’s where some people get missed and end up bouncing around the medical system.

Dr Alecia Macrow makes sense of complex pelvic pain in our new Gut-Brain Therapy episode.

So what actually is gut-directed hypnotherapy?

It’s a structured, science-backed technique that retrains how your gut and brain communicate. You’re fully awake and in control the whole time.

Gastroenterologist Dr Stephanie Moleski, of Thomas Jefferson University, explains how it works.

Nerva is a gut-brain therapy program that helps you manage digestive symptoms. No drugs, no diets.

The global standard for diagnosing gut-brain disorders just updated to Rome V, from the Rome Foundation, which has shaped how these conditions are diagnosed for 30+ years.

Built by 140+ experts worldwide, it puts the gut-brain connection at the center of IBS and names gut-directed hypnotherapy among the best-evidenced approaches.

That’s what Nerva is built on: gut-directed hypnotherapy and CBT-informed techniques, in a program, to help you manage your gut symptoms.

Been told your gut issues are “all in your head”?

A gastroenterologist wants you to know: your symptoms are real.

Dr Stephanie Moleski, of Thomas Jefferson University, explains the gut is packed with serotonin receptors, so when stress rises, gut symptoms often follow. Not imagined. It’s the gut-brain connection.

Nerva is a gut-brain therapy program that helps you manage digestive symptoms by retraining how your gut and brain communicate. No drugs, no diets.

Living with Crohn’s alongside a difficult relationship with food is one of the hardest things to navigate. Where do you start?

In this clip, psychologist Kelli Rugless, PsyD, CEDS starts with education: helping the patient understand how Crohn’s, stress and eating behaviors interact. That means knowing your gut can stay sensitive even in remission, and understanding how very restrictive diets and long stretches without eating can affect both binge eating and how your gut functions.

The full episode of Gut-Brain Therapy brings Dr. Kelli together with gastroenterologist Jordan Shapiro and dietitian Brittany Rogers to talk through care that connects the gut and the mind.
