Happy Juneteenth!
Today marks the anniversary of the day in 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed still laboring enslaved African Americans that they were free. This announcement came two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation had legally declared their freedom. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the long struggle for freedom and the momentous milestones achieved by the African Diaspora community.
