New York Self-Inquiry Circle

New York Self-Inquiry Circle Welcome. Our inspiration for our work with meditation and self-inquiry is Swami Shankarananda. His books are listed below: His writing is clear and enjoyable.

Begin with Happy for No Good Reason which is an excellent introduction to meditation and self-inquiry. This book offers practical understanding of meditation and techniques that you can begin to apply right away. Since hard copies of Swami Shankarananda’s books are not easily accessible in the US, I offer a link to the Kindle version, which is easily available and inexpensive. Here is the link for

The book comes with a CD that contains, among other things, the guided meditation on 4 energy centers that is practiced with Shiva Process Self-Inquiry.

Devotee: Which is more important, meditation or chanting the divine name?

BABA: You can understand this from your own experience. After chanting the divine name for a while, don’t you feel like sitting still? Doesn’t the mind turn inward? Meditation is the fruit of chanting the name. Once you are meditating there is no need to chant. Therefore, meditation is more important.

Devotee: Is it true that it is difficult to meditate in Kali Yuga (present age, the Dark Age), because the mind does not become focussed?

BABA: The division of time into ages is relevant only to worldly life, not to spiritual life. When I see such love for God in your hearts I feel that we are living in Sat Yuga (the age of truth), not Kali Yuga. Since we are able to explore the outer world so well, it is absolutely possible to explore the inner world as well.

Devotee: Isn’t there a danger of becoming inactive through meditation?

BABA: No. Withdrawal into the Self does not make you inactive or idle. On the contrary, it gives you more energy and makes you more dynamic. For example, when you leave your car parked for a couple of hours, and when you come to use it again you find that it runs just as well as before, if not better. The same is true of the mind. Giving it a rest from the many scattered and varied activities of your waking state, serves to collect It and refresh it. That is why sleep leaves you feeling fresh. The mind, in the sleep state, has been collected and stilled.

Devotee: What is the method of attaining the Blue Pearl?

BABA: To fall in love with God is the method.
