It is with a heavy and full heart that we share the passing of one of Tanenbaum’s pillars, our dearest Dr. Judith “Judy” Banki, Senior Advisor of Interreligious Affairs at Tanenbaum. Heavy, because we have lost a special friend and a visionary. Full, because Judy left an indelible imprint on this world – and on all who were lucky enough to know her. An internationally renowned writer, lecturer, pioneer in interreligious affairs, a mother, grandmother, and dear friend to loved ones worldwide, Judy passed away on August 17, 2026.

Working together with Tanenbaum namesake Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum, Judy was key to laying the groundwork for long-term Catholic-Jewish reconciliation. She analyzed Catholic textbooks and religious texts, and ensured revisions so that Jews and Judaism were portrayed with accuracy and respect. She authored “The Image of the Jews in Catholic Teaching,” a memorandum that helped pave the way for the historic declaration, Nostra Aetate, adopted at the Second Vatican Council. And during that seminal event, it was Judy who wrote summaries of its deliberations that were later published in the annual American Jewish Year Book. She was a founding member of the Women of Faith Task Force, and the only woman to give a paper at the 1993 Vatican-Jewish conference in Baltimore.

We are saddened by the recent attack at Central Synagogue. Our hearts and thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the Jewish community of New York. At Tanenbaum we condemn antisemitism and acts of hatred and violence targeting people because of their faith. Antisemitism and hatred are not solely beliefs and thoughts. They are behaviors and actions. And regardless of our beliefs, we do not have the right to engage in destructive behaviors towards any community. We do not have the right!

Building respectful and safe spaces for people of all backgrounds and beliefs is up to each and every one of us. It's our collective responsibility to treat all people equally and to recognize that everyone has the right to come together and worship peacefully, without fear or threat.

A place of worship is a place of peace, sanctuary, and connection. Let us move forward together in solidarity, committed to protecting that peace for every community.

Shout out to our inaugural cohort of Tanenbaum’s !

The NIE is a peer-led, professional learning community dedicated to highlighting respect for religious identity as an essential part of inclusive and respectful learning in K-12 schools.

Since its launch, our cohort has collectively reached more than 800 students across the country & continues to grow as we welcome new members!

Member projects have included:

🍎 Inclusive door decorating contests for the holidays.
🍎 Photo journaling to explore students’ religious and non-religious identities.
🍎 Site visits to local houses of worship.
🍎 Civics activities connecting values & advocacy, including a visit from local City Council members.

We thank the NIE for their commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for students to explore identity with empathy and respectful curiosity.

Tanenbaum’s podcast series is LIVE with its first episode!

The mini series provides a special look into the lived experiences and practices of grassroots activists around the globe. This podcast series is particularly special given the intimate peacebuilder-to-peacebuilder conversations, drawing from shared backgrounds while learning about the unique contexts each of the work within.

In our very first episode, Dr. Sarah AK Ahmed interviews Rev. Bill Lowrey, an advocate for peace and reconciliation for the people of Sudan and South Sudan. His approach draws on the rich wisdom of the indigenous Nuer and Dinka peoples, integrating traditional peacemaking methods with modern theories of conflict resolution.

With Tanenbaum's 10th Annual just around the corner on June 11, we wanted to share a sneak peak into this year’s exciting agenda.

One of our sessions, “Building the Foundation: A Blueprint for Religious Inclusion” features panelists from Princeton University, The Hartford, and Weil, who will outline the day’s big ideas when it comes to enabling sustainable progress around religious inclusion at work. Drawing on client experience, the panel will share how organizations establish strong foundations and move from intention to implementation.
