What makes FSGS such a challenging disease to treat?

During a recent educational program, Dr. Joshua Zaritsky highlighted several realities that continue to challenge nephrologists treating FSGS:
• The cause of FSGS often remains unclear.
• Treatment approaches are largely empiric.
• Recurrence after kidney transplant remains a significant concern.
• Researchers continue to investigate the underlying mechanisms driving disease progression.

As our understanding of FSGS evolves, so does the opportunity to explore new approaches that may improve outcomes for patients facing resistant disease.

One of the themes emphasized during the discussion was the importance of continuing to ask why the disease occurs. He suggested that we work backwards by looking at a subset of successful patient outcomes to better understand the underlying disease mechanisms.

Advancing care starts with advancing knowledge.

Three leading institutions. One important conversation.

Recently, renowned pediatric nephrologist Dr. Joshua Zaritsky, MD, PhD, joined Kaneka and healthcare professionals at Nemours, Atlantic Health System, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital to discuss the challenges of managing refractory FSGS and the evolving role of lipoprotein apheresis.

The sessions focused on:
• The burden of FSGS
• Current treatment challenges in treatment-resistant nephrotic syndrome
• Patient selection considerations
• The role of lipoprotein apheresis as an adjunctive therapy and its potential impact on outcomes
We're grateful to the nephrologists, physicians, and nurses who participated in these discussions and continue to advance care for patients facing complex kidney diseases.

Last week we were in Scottsdale, AZ for the ASPC Annual Congress! 🌵

It was a great opportunity to connect with both new and familiar physicians, attend educational sessions, and host our Kaneka Expert Theater on Elevated Lp(a) and the Role of Lipoprotein Apheresis in High-Risk Patients, featuring Dr. Maya Safarova and moderated by Dr. P. Barton Duell.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a successful event. We always enjoy the opportunity to share knowledge, build relationships, and continue advancing awareness of elevated Lp(a) and cardiovascular risk reduction.

Living with kidney disease can feel overwhelming, especially with conditions like FSGS (Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis).

FSGS affects the kidney’s filtering units (glomeruli), making it harder for your body to remove waste and control protein levels. One of the most common signs? Protein in the urine (proteinuria).

While FSGS can be complex, understanding it is the first step toward managing it 💙

👉 Talk to your care team if you have concerns about symptoms or treatment options.

If you or a loved one has FSGS, you’re not alone 💙

Managing kidney disease often involves:
✅ Regular monitoring
✅ Medications prescribed by your care team
✅ Lifestyle adjustments
✅ Ongoing support

New approaches may be available for select patients who haven’t responded to traditional therapies. Talk to your provider to see if Liposorber is a good fit.

Did you know there’s a treatment option for select FSGS patients who do not respond to or tolerate standard treatment options?

Liposorber® LA-15 is a FDA-approved Humanitarian Use Device (HUD) for adult and pediatric patients with nephrotic syndrome associated with primary FSGS who haven’t responded to standard therapies.

The treatment works by removing substances in the blood that may play a role in the disease process.

💬 Ask your healthcare provider if this option might be appropriate for you.

How can treatment help in FSGS? It may start with what’s in your blood.

Liposorber® therapy works by lowering harmful cholesterol (LDL) and other substances that may damage the kidneys.

This may help:
💧 Protect the kidney’s filtering cells
💊 Improve response to certain medications in some patients
🔥 Reduce inflammation linked to kidney damage

For some people with FSGS, this approach may support better disease management alongside standard care.
