What makes FSGS such a challenging disease to treat?
During a recent educational program, Dr. Joshua Zaritsky highlighted several realities that continue to challenge nephrologists treating FSGS:
• The cause of FSGS often remains unclear.
• Treatment approaches are largely empiric.
• Recurrence after kidney transplant remains a significant concern.
• Researchers continue to investigate the underlying mechanisms driving disease progression.
As our understanding of FSGS evolves, so does the opportunity to explore new approaches that may improve outcomes for patients facing resistant disease.
One of the themes emphasized during the discussion was the importance of continuing to ask why the disease occurs. He suggested that we work backwards by looking at a subset of successful patient outcomes to better understand the underlying disease mechanisms.
Advancing care starts with advancing knowledge.
