Scurvy isn't really a vitamin problem. It's a folding problem.

Collagen is built as a long strand that has to twist into a stable triple helix. It only holds that shape if certain points get chemically modified first a reaction needing vitamin C as a cofactor and oxygen as an ingredient. Miss either and the strand folds wrong and gets destroyed before it ever becomes skin.

Everyone knows the vitamin C half. Almost nobody mentions the oxygen half.

Now look at the timescales. Your outer skin runs fast new cells form at the base, reach the surface in about two weeks, and are gone within the month. You're wearing skin that didn't exist in January.

The collagen underneath turns over across years. Structure, not surface.

Which is why a shortfall down there stays invisible. The fast layer keeps replacing itself and everything looks fine, while the slow layer quietly loses more than it builds. By the time it shows, the deficit is old.

Most of your gut bacteria can't survive oxygen.

That's not a flaw. Your gut lining keeps its inner surface almost oxygen-free on purpose, and the bacteria you want are the ones that can only live there.

The cells lining your colon do that work themselves. They burn oxygen at high rates as fuel, consuming it before it reaches the interior. Low oxygen inside isn't the absence of a process. It's the product of one.

So when those cells run low on energy, they stop burning as much. Oxygen leaks in. The anaerobes die back and oxygen-tolerant species move into the space they left.

That's dysbiosis with a mechanism attached. Not bad bacteria winning a fight the barrier losing the energy to maintain its own conditions.

And that lining reports upward. The vagus nerve carries the state of that environment to the brain continuously, which is why the effects don't stay in the digestive system.

Recovery begins long before an injury feels healed.

When tissue is damaged, the body has to manage inflammation, restore circulation, rebuild structural proteins, and supply enough energy for repair. Oxygen is involved throughout that process, especially in tissues where blood flow has been disrupted by injury.

Breathing is about far more than bringing oxygen into the body.

Every breath coordinates a balance between oxygen delivery, carbon dioxide regulation, and blood flow. While oxygen fuels cellular function, carbon dioxide plays a critical role in controlling blood pH and helping hemoglobin release oxygen where it's needed most through a process known as the Bohr Effect.

Breathing through the nose adds another important advantage by producing nitric oxide, a signaling molecule that supports blood vessel dilation and more efficient oxygen delivery throughout the body.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy works through a different physiological mechanism. Under pressure, oxygen dissolves into plasma, allowing it to reach oxygen-compromised tissue independently of normal hemoglobin transport. A constantly active mind isn't simply a matter of workload.

It's the result of brain networks that have become conditioned to remain engaged, even when the external demands have stopped.

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is responsible for internal processing, including self-reflection, planning, memory, and anticipation. Under chronic stress, this network can remain persistently active, making it difficult for the brain to fully switch into a restorative state.
