Exciting that Canada’s new food guide reflects the scientific evidence. With more of a focus on whole, plant based foods, no emphasis on meat or dairy, and half a plate filled with vegetables and fruit, it’s a great start! Whereas once Canada suggested three servings of dairy per day as a nod to the dairy industry, there is no mention of dairy as a necessity in the new guide (we don’t need cow’s milk- only baby cows do) - they looked to science over industry.

Hope that one day the US does the same, rather than manipulating the guide then dumping meat and dairy surpluses on the poor and the sick as a means of propping up these horrific industries. Science, not money should determine our health and that of the planet!

The new guide shows an image of a plate, half of it covered with fruits and vegetables. The other half is divided into whole grains and ‘proteins’

Extremely important evidence based report out today from the Lancet on the need for a plant-based diet to sustain the health of our planet and its inhabitants.

What does a healthy diet from sustainable food production look like? The EAT-Lancet Commission will publish the first scientific targets in mid-January 2019.

"The new report, in JAMA Oncology, found that from 2011 to 2015, among people 30 and older, 4.7 percent of cancers in men and 9.6 percent of those in women were attributable to excess weight — some 37,670 cancers in men, and 74,690 in women every year."

The highest rates of weight-associated cancer are in the South, the Midwest, Alaska and Washington, D.C.; the lowest were in the Mountain States, New England and Hawaii.

“The keto diet may not be worth pursuing, even for diabetics or the obese, if we are mortgaging those diseases for higher rates of heart disease or colon cancer, a possibility given the low amounts of fiber consumed on these diets. More, we already know that the diet has not been without consequence for pediatric patients treated with it for refractory epilepsy, which has been ongoing since the 1920s.

From this population, children have developed kidney stones, acidosis, fractures and stunted growth. At the more serious end of the spectrum, children on the diet have died from arrhythmias arising from selenium deficiency and pancreatitis.”

You can lose just as much weight if not more, and reverse diabetes quickly, by switching to a Whole Foods, plant based diet. It’s not only just healthy to remain on long term, it is disease preventive.

Let food be thy medicine – but not if it involves a Faustian bargain of your health.

Kind of a no-brainer as paleo (and keto) diets emphasize artery clogging foods and eliminate so many healthful, fiber rich foods. Stay away if you want a healthy heart! Those who eat a whole foods, plant based diet have the lowest incidence of chronic disease and have the lowest BMI (are the thinnest) of any dietary pattern.

Eating more red meat under the Paleo diet paired with a lack of whole grains results in higher levels of a biomarker linked to heart disease, new research suggests.
