🩸 Tuesday Truth
Can yoga replace strength training?
The answer is...Not for most people.
Yoga is an incredible form of movement, and I recommend it to many people because of its benefits.
Depending on the style and intensity, it can improve:
🧘 Balance and stability
🧘 Flexibility and mobility
🧘 Core strength
🧘 Stress management
🧘 Mind-body awareness
Some styles, like Power Yoga or Ashtanga, can even build muscular strength by using your own body weight.
But if your goal is to preserve muscle, improve bone health, support healthy aging, or improve blood sugar, yoga alone usually isn't enough.
Strength training provides a different type of stimulus by progressively challenging your muscles over time.
That's what helps build and maintain muscle mass, something that's especially important as we age.
And here's why that matters for blood sugar:
Your muscles are one of the biggest places your body stores and uses glucose.
Building and maintaining muscle can improve insulin sensitivity, helping your body use blood sugar more effectively.
But let's get clear on this...I am not saying there are no benefits to yoga.
Yoga and strength training complement each other beautifully.
Yoga can improve mobility, recovery, balance, and stress management, while strength training helps build muscle and support metabolic health.
Now if you ask what I typically guide my clients to do when it comes to exercise and movement?
Find movement you enjoy, and include a little of both whenever you can.
