A bad headache can be hard to label in the moment, but migraine and tension headaches often behave differently.
A migraine is more likely to feel throbbing or pulsing, get worse with everyday activity, and come with nausea or stronger sensitivity to light and sound.
A tension headache more often feels like steady pressure or tightness and usually stays about the same when you move around.
Pain location can add context, but it is less useful on its own because either type can vary.
If headaches keep coming back, track several features together: what the pain feels like, what makes it worse, what other symptoms appear, and how long it lasts. That pattern can give you and your clinician much more useful information than simply saying where your head hurts.
