Tomorrow (wed 2/10)at 1pm

“A psychiatrist who experienced this is a psychiatrist worth listening to”

Dr. Viktor Frankl is often described by professionals as perhaps the greatest thinker on the topic of life purpose and meaning.

Frankl, a practicing psychiatrist in the 1940s, spent over 4 years in a N**i camp. With every possession lost, suffering from hunger, cold, sickness, daily beatings, and death by gas imminent at any moment, somehow Frankl and others found meaning. How? What Frankl learned through both his personal and professional experiences can provide significant insight for the rest of us.

Please join our team of therapists on Wed. Feb 10th at 1pm EST.

The workshop is free for everyone. Signup on our website.

"Why would I pay someone to listen to me talk?" It's a valid question! And at June Health, we encourage everyone to share openly with any of the above mentioned people. We also want to point out some of the key differences when speaking with a trained therapist:

1. Objectivity. People who know us and care about us, will many times bring their biases and agendas to the conversation. This doesn't have to be sinister either - it could be as simple as their feelings or personal needs clouding their judgment on what is best.

2. 100% Focus on You. In a typical conversation(s), the focus shifts back and forth between people. One person may feel guilty for "dominating" the conversation. Therapy is only about you, and your life.

3. Trained & Experienced. Probably the most important. A good therapist has likely "seen this movie before" and will have a deep understanding of what works and what doesn't. They will know what to say (and what not to say) to help you.

4. Confidential. People often like to gossip, need I say more :) Therapists have a strong legal and ethical obligation to keep everything you say strictly confidential.

5. Predictable & Repeatable. Often one conversation is not enough, and finding time for recurring follow-ups can be difficult with people in our day-to-day lives. We may feel we are bothering them or overstepping by bringing up the same subjects repeatedly. Resentment may occur. A therapist will ensure there is a predictable time set aside every week, bi-weekly or monthly (whatever is needed). When something isn’t right physically, it is totally normal and accepted to go see a trained professional. Emotional Health is no different! PLEASE don't leave your emotional health in the hands of someone not qualified. Go see a pro!

I wrote those words, because I've lived them. In my own life, I've learned time and time again (often the hard way) that emotional health is the foundation of nearly everything else that's important. Choosing the 'right' people to be in our lives and maintaining healthy relationships depends more on our own emotional health than anything else. Career success and finding meaning in our work is infinitely easier when we're emotionally healthy. Even our physical health is deeply intertwined with our emotional health. When our minds and hearts are healthy, good things follow in all aspects of life. Sometimes I feel like this is life's best kept secret (which isn't a good thing!), so spread the word about emotional health and do something today to take care of your own. -Steve Shaheen, Founder of June Health.

Many of our ‘automatic’ thought patterns , behaviors and reactions to situations come from what was modeled for us by our parents and siblings growing up. The truth is, that no matter how “normal” we might think our childhood was, there are bound to be some behaviors we learned which are “unskillful” – counterproductive to our well-being and happiness. Are you aware of what yours are? Does someone help you see the ones that are hard to notice?

We may want to change these things all at once, or say things to ourselves like “that isn’t really who I am.” However, somewhat paradoxically, awareness and compassionate acceptance are the first steps towards meaningful change. From there, healing and growth takes time. Months, years and sometimes even decades. Enjoy the journey. Savor the small moments. And most of all, accept that each day is progress and not perfection.

When both clients and therapists feel they are in a high quality, secure, and peaceful setting, the therapeutic experience is enhanced, leading to better client results. At June Health, we put significant effort into ensuring our office space is quiet, modern, and professional. We are located at 14th Street and 7th Avenue in Manhattan. Authentically embracing our feelings, without judgment is an important part of Emotional Health. Easier said than done! We all get embarrassed or angry about the feelings we have sometimes. We may avoid, numb or shove these feelings down. At some point today, will you take a pause and allow yourself to fully feel whatever it is you’re feeling? Can you sit with this feeling for a few moments without harshly judging yourself?

How does one begin the journey towards Emotional Health and a better life? There is so much self-help advice out there it can feel overwhelming, and prevent us from ever getting started. Fortunately there are experts who have helped thousands of people in similar situations along this path. They are our trusted guides. Therapists cannot do the work for us, but can show us the way to a better and more fulfilling life.

It is human nature to do everything we can to try and avoid difficulty and pain. However, as Robert Frost so beautifully reminds us, the only way to grow and to heal is not to avoid, distract or numb, but to try and embrace our difficulties and pain as imperfectly as we can. No one has to do this work alone.

We are a group of committed & compassionate therapists located in New York City.

We believe that Emotional Health is the foundation of meaningful relationships, happier family, fulfilling work, greater physical health and a clear mind. Simply put, a better life.

In addition to our role as therapists, we also “walk the walk” ourselves. Every day in our own lives, we do our best to practice the things we talk about with our clients. We try, often imperfectly, to live authentically and continue to grow as people. From this, comes genuine compassion and understanding.
