Some of these brands don’t show up for Black women…they show up when it’s time to profit from us.They see our buying power… and suddenly the romance starts.

They get very intentional about centering Black people, Black women especially—but only at very specific times:
Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Black History Month.
Juneteenth.
The holiday season.

See the pattern?

That’s when the messaging shifts.
That’s when we suddenly become the focus. When you start seeing “Black-owned” everywhere.

And then their consistency changes.
No real engagement.
No connection beyond the campaign.
And if I’m being honest, some of it feels manufactured.

So here are a few things I personally pay attention to:
1. A page that suddenly appears—or gets very active—around key cultural moments

2. You check Page Transparency and realize the page is new, recently renamed… or managed overseas

3. The brand has changed names multiple times or has a vague, hard-to-follow backstory

4.The content feels generic… like it could apply to anyone. A lot of “relatable” or first-person stories, but no real people connected to them

5.The comments/reviews feel off… repetitive things like “I got mine” or “I love it” with no real detail or personal voice

6. Heavy use of Black imagery, but no visible Black leadership or presence behind the brand

7. Little to no engagement with the community unless something is being sold

I’m not saying every brand is like this.
But I am saying:
Every brand that markets to Black women is not necessarily rooted in or accountable to us.

Pay attention to who shows up consistently… not just seasonally.
