I value my clients highly, and travel the world to accommodate their schedules. My work has been featured in magazines, music videos, and the Tony Award-winning series, "The Sopranos." Scarring Alopecia: What You Need to Know (And Why Early Diagnosis Matters More Than You Think)
When you Google the word “alopecia,” what comes up?
Most people see images of patchy hair loss or read about autoimmune conditions like alopecia areata. What’s often missing from those search results—and from everyday conversation—is a lesser-known but far more serious category of hair loss: scarring alopecia. And that lack of visibility is part of the problem.
What Is Scarring Alopecia
Scarring alopecia, also known as cicatricial alopecia, is not just hair loss. It is a group of inflammatory conditions that permanently destroy hair follicles. Once a follicle is damaged to that degree, it cannot regenerate. That means the hair loss is irreversible. This is what makes early detection and treatment so critical.
The Reality: Scarring Alopecia is Often Diagnosed Too Late
Here are the facts: scarring alopecia is frequently diagnosed late due to a lack of awareness among patients and, at times, even within general medical care. It rarely starts with obvious hair loss. Instead, it begins subtly.
You might notice:
“It’s just an itch.”
“There’s a little tingling.”
“That burning sensation is back again.”
“My scalp feels tight today.”
“Maybe I just need to change my shampoo.”
And so the cycle continues. Weeks turn into months. Months turn into years. Meanwhile, the inflammation continues beneath the surface, quietly damaging follicles.

Getting a Scalp Analysis matters. Here is a great example. My client had started to lose her hair due to a few genetic factors, but she also had been damaging her hair for years with aggressive styling tools. Hairbrush attached to the blow dryer, hair brush with a metal inner tube. Overuse of curling irons and poor use of hair care products. We addressed all of her hair and scalp. And you can see in the photos the different outcomes with the changes she made. My job is to understand your hair and scalp, and your struggles. Then create a treatment plan. 🔬🥰

I really enjoy being a Trichologist. The most rewarding is learning from experts in hair and scalp care. As an affiliate member of I would like to share a wonderful message from Professor Andrew Messenger.
Registration with the IoT is now accredited by the Professional Standards Authority. The training has improved dramatically – the IOT now awards a nationally accredited Level 5 diploma in Clinical Trichology and CPD has become an essential feature of working as a trichologist. From my perspective the closer links that have developed between dermatologists and trichologists have been particularly gratifying to see. We have similar skill sets but they are not the same and working together can only be to the benefit of our patients. One area where trichology does have largely untapped potential is in research. There are a few notable trichologist researchers and there is an increasing presence by trichologists at hair research events. This trend that needs to be encouraged. It will enhance the profile of the profession as well as contributing to knowledge that benefits patients.
