China has just hit a major milestone with its ultra-high-speed (UHS) maglev train, which successfully completed its demonstration test in Shanxi Province. This next-generation maglev train can reach speeds of up to 1,000 km/h, marking a huge step forward for high-speed transportation.
The test, conducted in Yanggao County, Datong City, used a superconducting maglev vehicle traveling through a 2-kilometer-long pipeline in a low-vacuum environment. During the test, the train showed impressive performance, achieving smooth navigation, stable suspension, and safe stopping—all in line with the pre-set specifications. The speed and suspension height were exactly as expected, and the train followed the planned trajectory.
This test was significant in verifying the key technologies that will make the UHS maglev system viable, including the ability to maintain a large-scale vacuum environment, superconducting navigation, and the seamless coordination between the various systems in the low-vacuum pipeline.
The maglev system combines aerospace technology with traditional railway tech and aims to push train speeds to new limits. Construction began in April 2022, and the goal is to connect China’s megacities. If the system is fully implemented, travel times between major cities like Beijing and Shanghai could be reduced to just about 90 minutes—faster than ever before.
