NY/NJ gluten free food recommendations outside of the city:
There were quite a few gems we enjoyed, including Famous Pizza on our way upstate from Newark. While not dedicated gluten free, the staff was very knowledgeable about cross-contamination and assured us that they use all separate bowls, pans, utensils, and ingredients for gf, and the pizza was delicious. Leftovers made an excellent lunch later that week.
We were staying in New Windsor, so we went to Hudson Taco twice for dinner during our stay. It’s right on the Hudson River and has a great variety of tacos, most of which are naturally gf. Knowledgeable staff who take food allergies seriously-just order on a separate ticket from the rest of the table so they’re extra careful. The street corn on the cob and the house-made hibiscus iced tea were a delicious addition to the tacos and chips and salsa.
Happened to find Rino’s Eatery for lunch on a day we were near Walkill and the farms, and it was such a treat!Extensive regular and gf menu, kind knowledgeable staff, and gf items are made completely separate to avoid CC. Had a hot Italian sandwich and the grilled chicken parm pizza, and both were so good I didn’t think they were actually gluten free. After the meal we met the owner/chef Rino who introduced himself to each of us in our group and shared some of his story-turns out his wife has celiac and that inspired him to make all kinds of delicious dishes that she could eat available in his restaurant. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Stopped into post lunch for some wonderful cider on tap and a walk through part of the orchard. We were too full to order food, but their kitchen does offer some gf options to pair with the cider tastings.
When traveling and at home we always read reviews on the app to help us decide where we want to try, so when we have good or bad experiences we always try to add our reviews on there to help others. All of these places got great reviews from us this time. Looking forward to these and more on the next trip upstate.
