In honor of Black History Month, we are highlighting the work of Dr. Kymyona Burk, who helped create astonishing advances in reading and literacy for students across the state of Mississippi. Dr. Burk is currently a senior policy fellow at ExcelinEd, where she helps states build new or improved K-3 reading policies. Dr. Burk has inspired our work at Say Ah! with her strong commitment to improving literacy—which not only underpins health literacy but is also an important driver of positive health outcomes.

Continuing our celebration of Black History Month, Say Ah! highlights the innovative and impactful work of Hip Hop Public Health co-founders, Dr. Olajide Williams and Doug E. Fresh. Hip Hop Public Health has created innovative ways of advancing health literacy through community partnerships and music. This organization and its co-founders inspire us to find new ways to develop meaningful connections with communities and to meet people where they are when implementing health literacy initiatives.

At Say Ah! we use the work done by past presidents to guide and inspire our health literacy initiatives! Including health literacy in health policy and programs is key to achieving better individual and population health. The work done by past U.S. Presidents shows the potential work that can be done on the national level for health literacy and expanding access to care.

Say Ah! celebrates Black History Month by showcasing Dr. Georges Benjamin, the Chief Executive Officer of the American Public Health Association. As a physician leader, Dr. Benjamin’s work in public health shines a light on the disparities in access to preventative care and healthy choices. He inspires Say Ah! to include advocacy skills in our patient empowerment workshops to ensure people get the care they need when they need it.

We’re continuing our celebration of Black History Month by spotlighting Dr. Lisa Cooper, the founder of the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Equity. Dr. Cooper focuses on patient-centered interventions to reduce racial disparities in health systems, in particular improving the ability of providers to meet the health communication needs of the people they serve. She inspires our initiatives to train frontline providers in health literacy equity principles and best practices.

Continuing our Black History Month celebration, Say Ah! honors mental health advocate and community health leader, Dr. Altha Stewart. Her decades of advocacy have focused on securing equitable, culturally responsive care for marginalized communities and driving reform in medical education to ensure appropriate messaging—and messengers. Her work directly inspires and informs our efforts to address disparities in both health and mental health literacy.
