Congratulations to our Faculty Coordinator Genevieve Smith, PT, DPT, OCS, AIB-VRC! She recently earned her EdD in Movement Science from Teacher's College, Columbia University 🎓

Genevieve's concentration was in Motor Learning and Control, with a focus on cognitive motor interference of postural control. During her time at Columbia, Genevieve gained expertise in teaching and learning, clinical inquiry and research, and the biomechanical analysis of human movement.

Genevieve's dissertation thesis, "Sensory Integration and Cognitive Motor Interference in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment," examined sensory integration and cognitive motor interference of postural control in older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment. APDM wearable sensors were used to collect postural sway data while participants completed static balance tests with a dual cognitive task. The results suggest older adults with mild cognitive impairment demonstrate different task prioritization strategies compared to cognitively healthy older adults during static balance conditions.

Genevieve says she is especially thankful to her mentors and colleagues at Spear for their consistent support throughout this journey to make it possible for her to achieve this dream. Congratulations to Genevieve on this huge accomplishment! 🎉

We understand that the ongoing LIRR service disruption may make commuting into the city difficult for some of our patients. If you’re still able to make it in, your appointments at your current Spear location will continue as scheduled. If not, your recovery doesn’t have to pause. Patients can continue their plan of care at our Long Island locations in Garden City, Great Neck, Bellmore, and Rockville Centre, or via telehealth until service resumes. Questions? Give us a call at 212-759-2282.

A few days away from the day-to-day, and a lot to bring back.

The Spear Advanced Leadership Training (SALT) brought Spear leaders together to reflect, reconnect, and focus on what it takes to create exceptional experiences as we continue to grow. Across sessions on hospitality and innovation, the conversation kept coming back to one idea: the small moments matter, and strong leadership turns them into something people can truly feel.

We were honored to learn from Byron Halliburton of The Ritz-Carlton Leadership Center and Nick Hedges, CEO of Raintree, whose perspectives challenged us to think differently about service, adaptability, and emerging technologies. Our time away also included a team-building activity with impact beyond Spear, as attendees assembled 18 backpacks for the local Boys & Girls Club.

And we were proud to celebrate Jon Rogers as this year’s Founder’s Award recipient. The award recognizes a leader who reflects Spear’s core values and the vision, spirit, and commitment that continue to shape who we are and where we’re headed.

SALT is never just about the time spent together. It’s about what comes back with us: new ideas, stronger connections, and a renewed commitment to our teams and the experience we create across Spear. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we share a new video series featuring SALT attendees and the lessons they’re bringing back to their teams.

Let's keep moving forward, together!

Out on the court with helping their volleyball players stay a Bump-Set-Spike ahead.

Our team led injury screenings focused on movement, strength, and the small things that make a big difference over the course of a season. A few quick adjustments now can mean fewer setbacks later.

Always a great day working with athletes who care about how they move and putting them in a better position to keep doing what they love!

We found Dan and Dave in the 90s…and some things haven’t changed.

On March 22, 1999, they opened the doors to Spear in Midtown East with one location, one vision, and one first patient: Vito. They set out to build a practice rooted in care, consistency, and a genuine connection with every person who walked through the door.

What started as a single location has grown across the tri-state, but that foundation is still what drives us today. The relationships, the pride in the work, and the commitment to showing up for people every day.

To everyone who has been part of the journey — thank you. You’ve helped shape Spear into what it is today.

27 years later, and we’re still moving forward. Happy Birthday, Spear!

Such a great turnout at .athleticclubs Financial District open house last weekend! The Spear team was thrilled to be there celebrating the launch of AC's new space and connecting with their incredible community.

Mike Canino, PT, DPT, Ryan Tierney, PT, DPT, and Kim Pyle, PT, DPT were on site supporting the event, guiding athletes through recovery, movement, and everything that helps them stay strong and perform at their best.

We’ve loved partnering with the Athletic Clubs community over the years, and this new FiDi space just means more chances to do it. Keep an eye out for Spear at upcoming AC events 👀 We’ll be there to keep you moving!

If you want to work with performers, there's simply no substitute for being in the heart of New York's Broadway district!

Our Times Square location serves a unique caseload that includes Broadway artists, professional dancers, and elite performers. Through our Performing Arts rotation and SPARCLE program (Spear's Performing Arts Rehabilitation Cohort for Learning and Engagement), students receive structured mentorship, focused performing arts education, and meaningful clinical experience within one of the most dynamic communities in the world.

For students who dream about working with performers, this is a chance to step into that world early. It's a rare opportunity to work with performers in the place many of them call home. You’ll learn, problem-solve, and grow alongside clinicians who are deeply embedded in the performing arts community. With built-in mentorship and real clinical responsibility, this experience is designed to accelerate your growth in a way few rotations can. We’ve built this program with intention, and we’re looking for students who are ready to take center stage.

Applications close March 25 at 11:59pm EST. Click here to submit your application: https://spearcenter.co/apply

We encourage you to apply and immerse yourself in the world of performing arts medicine.
