π Why Magnesium Can Stay Low Despite Supplements
Magnesium may remain low if the dose is insufficient, the supplement is poorly absorbed, or diarrhea and intestinal disorders reduce absorption. Ongoing losses can also occur with uncontrolled diabetes, heavy alcohol use, kidney problems, diuretics or prolonged use of proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole and pantoprazole. Instead of simply taking more magnesium, ask your clinician to review the formulation, dose, medications and possible underlying cause, especially if you have kidney disease.
