I am very happy to announce the first of our 2026 frankincense oil is in the store! For those of you who know about this incredible journey back, I’ll be writing more in detail once my jet lag has passed. We have been distilling in Salalah, once again, and I drove 2 kg back to Dubai with me, arriving back the the war started. Most Dubai flights were cancelled and/or rescheduled due to missile attacks-the airport suffered damage from drones. I flew back to NYC yesterday, with these 2 kilos, which we are decanting as I write this. More oil and hydrosol is due to leave Muscat for NYC in the next few days if the ceasefire holds. Please note that this is not our full supply, but slowly, slowly. Perseverance, patience and tenacity!

We have set up a temporary distillation, with only a couple of alembics, and it’s an emergency distillation while we see how the wind blows. Honestly, though, we are thrilled. After such a long hiatus, it’s like a dream come true

I’ve just had the pleasure of sitting down to coffee with our Hinoki distiller, Iacopo. It was thrilling to learn more about this unusual situation and the story behind the protected Hinoki trees in Nagano Prefecture. These particular trees are from Kyūiki-rin which means “Shrine Precinct Forest.” The trees come from this area; the shrine is dedicated to the sun goddess Ameterasu. The forest is massive and sacred. Its main purposes are to present a serene green buffer that protects the goddess from the secular human world and it also provides the Hinoki wood for the shrine, which is ritually rebuilt very 20 years. From these trees, the larger heartwood is cut and shaped, with smaller cuts going for traditional Noh masks and other sacred traditional items that need to be pure, refined and durable. It’s the sawdust from these cuts that is distilled for essential oil….care, consideration, intention. Thank you Iacopo, for this incredibly interesting information!

Back in the Land of Frankincense, finally! Here are some beautiful trees, living growing; thriving in seemingly impossible circumstances, right out of stone. No soundtrack added cause it’s impossible to improve on wind and small birdsong. And there’s the sound of the ocean in the background, not sure the actual audio is there, but the energy surely is. We will begin our distillation again as soon as we can. Such beautiful strong and impressive trees!
