As of 2025, there are 36.2 million small businesses in the U.S., making up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses and employing 62.3 million people

These small firms employed 62.3 million people, or 45.9% of all private-sector employees. They were responsible for 88.9% of overall job growth from 2023 to 2024.

Starting Costs: In 2024–2025, 27% of new small businesses cost between ($50,000) and ($175,000) to start.

Women-owned businesses saw an increase in average loan sizes, up to ($67,035) in 2024, and owned 44.6% of businesses.

️‼️BUT

Startup Survival: While 20% of small businesses fail within the first year, 50% fail by year 5, and 65% by year 10.

Primary Causes of Failure: The main reasons for failure are running out of cash/capital (38%) and lack of market need (35%).

‼️What would it mean for practice owners to offer exercise classes onsite or virtual as an employee perk?

For women in healthcare especially, meeting the physical activity guidelines is near impossible. Not just physically but mentally, financially, and emotionally.

According to a CDC/National Health Interview Survey (2020).

25% of women aged 18-44 meet the CDC guidelines.

10-20% of women aged 50+ meet the CDC guidelines.

And the percentage drops by a lot, for 65 and older.

Where are these women spending their time?

🔸Working
🔸Caregiving (hello sandwich gen)
🔸Home/Chores/Errands

What are the top barriers to exercise for women?

🔹 Time
🔹 Money
🔹 Knowledge/safety

This isn't just about a gym membership. This is about physical and mental health, about leading with empathy, creating a practice culture, and making sure your employees feel seen and valued.

The expectations are high especially for daughters, while ignoring some of the most obvious planning, to care for family members.

♻️Share this with a doctor or clinician that has older patients, and very clearly has family members helping them.

👐🏽Doctors can be a lifeline outside the exam room too, and we appreciate you for it!

Why is my 89-year-old student my muse?

🤸🏽She closed the gap: She didn't let the lack of a "how" stop her from finding a safe, structured program.
🤸🏽She knows her "Why": Living alone with no family nearby means her strength is her literal lifeline to independence.
🤸🏽She bridges the generations: Her friends are 40+. She is showing them (and me) exactly what is possible when we prioritize muscle and balance early.

Doctors, we need to do more than suggest activity.

We need to point patients toward the "how."

Because when we do, we help them live fiercely independent.

Oh, and build your circle. Social connection is the filling in the cake for living happy. (and yes, you can eat cake too)

I’ve noticed that the "heaviness" staff feels at the end of the day usually isn't from the patient load.

It’s from the friction of miscommunication.

When a doctor isn't clear, the staff's nervous system stays on "high alert".
