As of 2025, there are 36.2 million small businesses in the U.S., making up 99.9% of all U.S. businesses and employing 62.3 million people
These small firms employed 62.3 million people, or 45.9% of all private-sector employees. They were responsible for 88.9% of overall job growth from 2023 to 2024.
Starting Costs: In 2024–2025, 27% of new small businesses cost between ($50,000) and ($175,000) to start.
Women-owned businesses saw an increase in average loan sizes, up to ($67,035) in 2024, and owned 44.6% of businesses.

Startup Survival: While 20% of small businesses fail within the first year, 50% fail by year 5, and 65% by year 10.
Primary Causes of Failure: The main reasons for failure are running out of cash/capital (38%) and lack of market need (35%).
