Unique Butterflies was founded January 19th, 2013 when I
was just 12 years old and only had a vision of starting my nonprofit. I have 2 older brothers one that has dyslexia that I was not aware of until I became older and my other brother who was my inspiration who has cerebral palsy. That's when I realized how special needs is an array of different things and all kinds of special needs can fall u
nder an umbrella of many things. I've had this vision at the age of 10 and started implementing my vision at age 11. My mission is to open a multi-level resource and activity center for children with special needs to interact with their peers and others, and to have support groups for their families. Now as a 20 year old I have decided to mentor young children and somewhat "recreate" my business. I still have the absolute desire to spread awareness of special needs people, but now I want to start mentoring young girls and start with them first so we can go out and spread awareness as a group. I need every mentor on board and fully dedicated and passionate about the cause as I am. On this website you will see all the different steps I've taken to turn my business into a successful one!!! We serve the community in two ways:
1. Our mentoring program for teenage girls help them with social and etiquette skills and pairs each girl with another person that has special needs. In our approach, those with special needs are merged into society instead of having separate areas. They are people just like us.
2. Our Melanin Owned Business Launchpad project is a business incubator dedicated to reduce the disparities against black women business owners. Since 87.7 percent of black women are the breadwinners of their families, we want to help them get support in 3 areas which are severely underserved: 1)technology 2)mentorship 3)access to capital and support.
