KG Hospital care: Wheelchair-bound Bangladeshi patient starts walking
A 36-year-old wheelchair-bound female patient from Bangladesh came to KG Hospital with severe hip pain about 20 days ago.
Ever since she underwent a hip surgery (Dynamic Hip Screw Fixation) in Bangladesh about one-and-half-years ago, she developed health complications. Her hip pain continued unabated.
She could walk only with crutches. She depended solely on the wheelchair for her mobility. Seeking relief, she went to a hospital in Bangladesh. After taking a CT scan, the doctors there suggested another hip surgery. But she was not ready for another surgery.
With the help of her relatives who had earliergot treatment in KG Hospital, the patient came to KG Hospital. When she reached KG Hospital, her pain became unbearable, making her to cry.
On the advice of KG Hospital Chairman Dr G.Bakthavathsalam, a panel of doctors consisting of Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr A.Sakthivel, Chief Physician Dr T.Ramachandran, and Chief Executive Officer (Rehabilitation) Dr V.Mohan Gandhi was formed to examine the patient.
An X-ray showed nothing amiss with her hip. She was found to be a diabetic. After addressing her diabetic condition, she was placed under the “Structured Rehabilitation Programme” which included improving the muscle power, weight bearing capacity and gait training.
After one week of the rehabilitation measures with intensive physiotherapy started, she got rid of one of the crutches, and in another two days she gave up the second crutch also. On the ninth day she started walking on her own, without any support.
The patient, mother of two children, was too happy to get back her gait. The moment she started walking on her own the patient became too happy. The cry of pain transformed into cry of happiness.

KG Hospital organized an awareness camp on “Breast, cervical and ovarian cancers in women” on the Cordite Factory premises at Aruvankadu, the Nilgiris, on September 24, 2019. As many as 65 women attended the camp.
Dr Kavitha, a Post-Graduate Doctor in Gynaecology, gave a lucid talk on various types of cancers afflicting women. Women were susceptible to get breast, cervical and ovarian cancers.
Abnormal rise in Oestrogen level would also cause cancer. Late marriage and late pregnancy might also cause cancer.
The other causes of cancer could be eating junk foods, stress, sleep disorder and lack of physical exercise. The PG Doctor said that women above 21 years of age could take pap smear test to detect cancer.
Mammogram could be done for women 40 years and above. Children would not get fibroids. Therefore, there was no need for anxiety on this score. In case of doubt, doctor’s advice could be sought.
At puberty there would be a likelihood of getting cancer. In case of any doubt over breast cancer, self examination could be done. But self examination should be avoided during or immediately after menstruation period.
When any discharge was noticed in the ni***es, it was mandatory to consult a doctor. Dr Kavitha stated that KG Hospital has ultra modern facilities, including Mammogram, to detect and treat cancer in women.
In the interactive session that followed Dr Kavitha cleared the doubts raised by the women participants. She emphasized the need for taking preventive measures such as diet control and physical exercises for leading a happy and healthy life.
Dr Kavitha emphatically said that talcum powder should not be applied to reproductive organs because it posed cancer risk.

KG Hospital observes World Patient Safety Day
KG Hospital observed World Patient Safety Day on September 17, 2019 to create awareness among all its departments about the significance of the event. Chairman Dr G.Bakthavathsalam presided over the function.
In his speech he said, “It needs 30 medical personnel to save one life. So, doctors, nurses, and technicians must do their work perfectly. They must treat all the patients as their relatives.”
Even a small mistake committed by a single member of the medical team would spoil the image of the hospital built over several decades. Hospitals function with patients’ support. Hence, they should be treated as gods.
Mistakes can occur in many forms:
• Wrong diagnosis
• Administration of wrong medicines
• Over dosage of medication
• Nosocomial Infections (Hospital acquired infections)
• Wrong procedures
On an average 26 lakh people die every year due to unsafe medical care across the world. Therefore, the theme of World Patient Safety Day is:
Patient safety: A global health priority.
Dr Bakthavathsalam has called upon the hospital staff to strictly adhere to the Vision, Mission and Quality Policy of KG Hospital to render quality healthcare services and ensure safety of patients.
Poster competition, Quiz and Role Play marked the occasion.

Clean hands ensure healthy life: KG Hospital observed World Hand Hygiene Day 2019.
Chairman Dr G.Bakthavathsalam said, Hand washing is the basic technique required in healthcare service. Keeping clean hands will avoid hospital acquired infection. Doctors must ensure that nurses do the hand washing properly and vice versa.

Surgeons must wash their hands properly after surgery and after touching medical equipment and in between seeing one patient and another. They must use the right sterilization solution for the purpose.
Dr T.Ramachandran, Consultant Senior Physician, in his speech said that in the US 2 million people get affected by nosocomial infection (hospital acquired infection) and of them 99,000 die every year. Dr Raksh*ta, Infection Control Officer, screened slide shows on how to keep hand hygiene. Many doctors and nurses benefited from the programme. In KG Hospital the Infection Control Committee is very active and the hospital gives utmost importance to hand hygiene. It has drastically reduced the incidence of nosocomial infection. Longevity, diabetes, HIV and cancer cause immuno suppression among the people.

KG Hospital cures rarest of rare lung disorder:

A 29-year-old male patient with breathlessness was presented in KG Hospital recently. He had a complaint that even while walking for a short distance he was gasping for breath.
According to Dr K.Maheswaran, Pulmonologist of KG Hospital, a CT scan was done and the patient was checked for any possible pulmonary embolism.
On evaluation, pulmonary embolism was ruled out. The patient was suffering from a rare lung disorder called “pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (incidence one in 2 million people).”
Dr Maheswaran said that such a lung disorder caused by deposit of “surfactant surface active lipoprotein complex in the alveolai (air sacs in the lungs).”
When there is an excess formation of alveolar surfactants these would obstruct oxygen flow from the lungs to the blood.
This is caused either by hereditary factors or by contracting diseases. In this case, given the young age of the patient, it looks hereditary.
The patient was subjected to the clinical procedure (called Whole Lung Lavage for physically removing the proteinaceous material from the affected lung) in two sittings, with each session stretching to 4—6 hours.
This case is first of its kind in KG Hospital. The patient is now doing well.

Timely surgery saves UK dentist

Dentist John Young (64) left for home in London with the smile back on his face. He was rushed to the KG Hospital with severe abdominal pain.

Dr. Young's case was probably the toughest encountered by laparoscopic surgeon VP Shanmughasundaram. He had already undergone five surgeries: for cancer in the colon (intestine), an ileostomy closure (to stop passing of motion through the intestine), one for removal of the spleen after an accident 10 years ago and two cancer surgeries in the lungs. With plenty of surgical scars and the doctors had to look for an untouched portion in his abdomen for open surgery. Dr. Young had obstipation (cannot pass motion and gas) that caused severe pain and vomiting. The urea in his blood was 200 mg against the normal 40 mg. Both intestines were stuck due to surgical scars. Two dialysis were performed and nutritional support was given through a catheter inserted under the right collar bone.

Getting into the abdomen was tricky. The blocks were flushed out using a de-compressor, the affected part was removed and the intestine sutured back in a six-hour surgery. A medicine to prevent the intestines from sticking together was also applied. The patient recovered fully and was thankful to the doctors and team.
