If you see this guy this week, wish him a happy birthday 🎉

This is Ben, my husband and the calm to my chaos. He’s the steady one behind the scenes keeping everything grounded.

When you think about summer, toxins probably aren’t the first thing that comes to mind.

It’s sunshine, swimming, popsicles, and more time outside.

But summer can actually be one of the highest exposure seasons for kids.

Pools, sunscreen, plastics, pesticides, air quality…

Individually, they don’t seem like a big deal, but together, they add up.

And for kids with ADHD, that added load can actually exacerbate symptoms.

The good news, though, is that many of these are easy to reduce once you know what to look for.

Here are a few simple ways to start:

✔️ Rinse before and after swimming to reduce chlorine exposure
✔️ Choose a mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide)
✔️ Opt for cleaner, fragrance-free bug sprays when possible
✔️ Use stainless steel water bottles instead of plastic
✔️ Wash hands and rinse off after playing on grass or in dirt
✔️ Be mindful of air quality on high pollution days

👉 Save this so you know where to start 💛

This is what summer should look like. Give this post a đź’› if you love summer as much as I do!

Fresh air. Movement. Time in the water. Kids just being kids.

It's really a beautiful thing.

Another reason I love summer so much is that it's incredibly supportive for children with ADHD.

More sunlight = more Vitamin D

More movement = better regulation

More time outside = support for the nervous system

But at the same time, there are many environmental toxins during the summer. Things like:

pool chemicals
sunscreen
plastics
air quality
bug spray
pesticides

These toxins can exacerbate ADHD symptoms, especially when kids have compromised detoxification systems (which, unfortunately, a lot of kids with ADHD have).

So what's a parent supposed to do… avoid everything?

Definitely not!

That's not realistic or even necessary.

Instead, just be mindful and make small swaps:

✔️ Choose mineral sunscreen
✔️ Use cleaner bug sprays when possible
✔️ Rinse after swimming or outdoor play

You don’t have to skip all the fun summer activities. You just need to be a little more intentional about the things you can control 💛

I remember how hard it used to be with my ADHD son. I was constantly trying new “solutions” to reduce his symptoms - medications, supplements, essential oils, parenting strategies, therapies - you name it, we tried it.

But nothing worked.

Until I finally found something that did.

That's what I want to share with you in my free LIVE ADHD training!

I love this photo. Mostly because the smiles are actually real.

There was a time when family photos looked like this on the outside, but felt completely different behind the scenes. We’d get everyone in place, smile for the camera, and then go right back to the stress and tension.

Back then, a lot of our days revolved around managing really big ADHD symptoms. The constant movement, the meltdowns, the feeling of never quite knowing what the day was going to bring. It affected all of us more than I think people could see.

And I remember feeling pulled in a hundred directions, trying to support Oliver, trying to be present for Asher, and just feeling like I wasn’t doing any of it well.

Life looks really different now. Not perfect (because what is), but so much calmer and happier.

So when I look at this picture, it’s not just a photo to our family. It’s a reminder of how far we’ve come. 💛

Ever watched your ADHD child explode over something tiny and thought…

“How did we get here?”

I’ve been there.

Unfortunately, the more often this happens, the easier it is to start wondering if your child is just trying to make your life difficult.

In this week’s episode of the Soaring Child podcast, I’m sharing the mindset shift that completely changed the way I parented my son with ADHD.

The truth is, your child’s behavior is probably not defiance. It’s probably something else entirely.

What if some of the things in your home are quietly making ADHD symptoms worse?

Not in a dramatic, obvious way, but in small, everyday exposures that add up over time.

Things like:

âś…scented candles
âś… air fresheners
âś… plastic containers
âś… toxic cleaning products
âś… personal care items

On their own, these products don’t seem like a big deal.

But for kids with ADHD, whose systems are already working harder to stay regulated, this toxic load can add more stress to their systems and, in turn, make symptoms worse.

It’s not that anything here causes ADHD.

But it can make things feel harder than they need to be. (This is especially true if a child has compromised detoxification pathways, which we see regularly in ADHD kids).

So, does that mean you have to throw out everything that's not 100% natural?

Nope. That's not necessary (or realistic).

But, it does mean that over time, using LOTS of toxic products might add up.

So it's worth it to make some small incremental changes.

If you're unsure where to start, start here:

✔️ Ditch synthetic fragrances (throw out air fresheners and candles)
✔️ Swap plastic food storage containers for glass or stainless steel
✔️ Open windows each day for a few minutes

Every little bit helps, and doing these 3 things can reduce your child's toxic load over time!

If you’ve ever tried to make your home “less toxic," you’ve probably felt overwhelmed pretty quickly.

It feels like toxins are in EVERYTHING!

But remember, you don’t need a perfectly toxin-free home. (This isn't realistic for most families today, and it's also not necessary.)

Instead, focus on reducing the overall load your child’s body is dealing with.

Remember, it’s not one product, one exposure, or one decision that makes the difference. It’s the cumulative effect of what your child’s body is dealing with every single day.

Now, you might be reading this and wondering, what do toxins have to do with ADHD?

Actually...quite a bit!

It’s not that toxins cause ADHD, but they can absolutely add to the load the body is trying to manage.

And when that load gets too high, it can make regulation that much harder.

The good news is, most exposure comes from just a few key areas in homes.

Start there. Keep it simple. Build over time.

Save this and pick one place to start.

“Just focus” might be the least helpful advice an ADHD child can hear.

Because focus isn’t one big skill.

It’s a bunch of tiny skills working together, like starting, transitioning, staying with it, managing frustration, and not getting overwhelmed halfway through.

And when one of those pieces breaks down, the whole thing can fall apart.

In this episode of The Soaring Child Podcast with Russell Coaching for Students shares practical ways to help kids build those focus skills in real life.
