“The innocence of pregnancy was gone for me.” — Maddy 💙

After losing Connor at 37 weeks, Maddy knew pregnancy would never feel the same again.

When she eventually learned she was expecting again, hope and fear arrived together. Then, at 35 weeks, it seemed that fear was coming true.

At the hospital, she learned that baby William was okay, but doctors told her they needed to act fast.

This Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, milk donor Maddy is sharing her story in honor of Connor and every person who knows this kind of loss.

What would you want a family to know on their first day in the NICU?

That’s the question we asked Dr. Mandy Brown Belfort, MD, MPH, a neonatologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, researcher, and longtime member of our Medical Advisory Committee.

From learning to recognize milestones that don’t always look like milestones to accepting support when you need it, here are five things she’d want every NICU family to know.

“It’s a modern-day village.” — Ashley 💙

When Ashley’s newborn son Tobin was in the NICU, she did everything she could to provide the milk he needed to grow stronger. But with Tobin on oxygen and unable to latch, breastfeeding was a challenge.

Ultimately, donor milk helped bridge the gap.

For Ashley, every bottle delivered the milk her son needed, along with the reassurance that she wasn’t doing this alone.

Behind that milk were parents pumping in the middle of the night so babies like Tobin could receive the human milk they needed, a team at Mothers’ Milk Bank Northeast working every day to make sure that milk was safe, and clinicians caring for Ashley and Tobin every step of the way.

Ashley had found her village.

For the third year in a row, Morgan of Wellness Village NH, one of our designated milk depots, nominated us for a charitable award through her employer, Crane Currency.

This year, that nomination resulted in a generous $5,000 gift to help provide donor milk to babies and families who need it most.
