If your child is complaining of a headache, there are many underlying factors that could be at play. Consider the following causes and see if any might pertain to your child. By finding the root cause and treating it, you can often alleviate headaches without medicinal intervention. Of course, there is always a time and place for Tylenol or Motrin if the pain cannot be resolved with food, water, a cool down, and rest.
If your child has recently experienced head trauma or is suddenly experiencing persistent headaches, is waking up with headaches or being woken out of a sound sleep with them, or if the headaches are accompanied by vomiting, vision changes, or other changes to their physical or behavioral health, please let us know right away so that your child can be evaluated appropriately.

Today is National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Did you know that fi****ms are the leading cause of death for U.S. children and teens under the age of 18? Did you also know that in the U.S., 6.7 million children live in a home with at least one loaded, unlocked gun? Take time to educate yourself and your children about the importance of firearm safety, whether you own one or not. You could save a life.

Did you know that roughly a third of U.S. homes with children have guns? In fact, an estimated 4.6 million kids live with unlocked, loaded guns. That's a scary statistic when you think about the fact that even young toddlers are capable of finding unlocked guns in the home, and they are strong enoug...

Spending time in and around the water is a favorite summer activity for many of us here in New England. But staying vigilant and understanding the importance of water safety, especially with young children, is incredibly important. This article from HealthyChildren.org gives excellent guidelines. Here are a few highlights:

*Be sure to enclose your pool with a fence.
*Make sure to use self-latching gates around pools.
*Secure backyard water hazards (drainage ditches, ponds, etc).
*Empty water containers immediately after use.
*Do not let young children bathe unsupervised.
*Use life jackets around water and on boats.
*Avoid puddle jumpers, floaties, water wings, etc.
*Make sure there is one designated water watcher who never takes their eyes off children playing or swimming in the water. Take turns.
*Wear brightly colored swimsuits that stand out in the water.
*Start swim lessons young.
*Brush up on CPR and life saving skills.

And if your children are older and are strong swimmers, never let them swim alone - make sure they are always with a buddy. Encourage feet first jumping for first entry, especially in natural bodies of water where depth is unknown. And remember - sober swimming is the only safe swimming.

Water safety is important for all ages, but especially for toddlers. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children 1-4. Young children can drown in as little as an inch or two of water, and it can happen quickly and silently. Learn how to keep your toddler safe in this article.
