With hormone clinics popping up everywhere, it’s easy to assume hormones are the problem. And yes—balanced hormones can make us feel better. But what most people don’t realize is that hormone imbalance is often a *symptom* of a deeper issue. When you address those underlying imbalances, hormones frequently correct themselves. The answer isn’t always giving hormones—it’s giving the body what it needs to produce the right hormones, at the right times. Functional medicine gets to the root cause of hormone imbalance.

Did you know that one of the best things you can do to improve your sleep has nothing to do with your bedtime routine?

Morning light is one of the most powerful signals for your body’s circadian rhythm. I’ve made it a goal to get outside and see the sunrise each morning. With all the gray skies lately, today was the first day in a week I’ve actually seen the sun — but even on cloudy days, getting whatever morning light is available still helps.

Fresh air, hearing the birds sing, and a short walk are added bonuses.

And with daylight savings time starting tomorrow, sunrise will suddenly be an hour later… so there’s really no excuse to miss that morning light. ☀️

Do you wear a health tracking device?

I’ve tried several over the years and I’m curious what everyone is loving right now.

As someone who understands the importance of sleep, recovery, and overall health, I find the data from these devices fascinating.

I was recently given the chance to trial Whoop, and within a week I improved both my HRV and my sleep. The data is similar to what I see with my Fitbit, but the built-in coaching actually helped me do something with the data instead of just looking at it.

My only complaint? I wish it had basic watch features. If it did, it would be nearly perfect.

I also tried the Oura ring, but it didn’t work great for me since I lift weights, cook a lot, and wash my hands constantly. And while many people love the Apple Watch, the sleep tracking didn’t seem very accurate and despite being an Apple fan in general, I just didn’t love it.

At this point I feel like the perfect device would be a combination of all of them.

Functional Medicine Mom fail 🤦‍♀️. Yes I know the importance of Omega 3. Yes I cook salmon (only one kid will eat it). Yes I’ve given them Omega 3 supplements off and on over the years (but not consistently- you know how it goes).

I have NEVER seen an Omega Index that wasn’t low without consistent supplementation with a high quality fish oil for months. Even in my patients who eat a lot of salmon. So I no longer check a baseline to save patients money. I have patients supplement for 3 months and then check.

These are my kids results AFTER several months of consistent supplementation (the lowest one hasn’t been getting it as much as I thought). The best one takes a very high quality adult dose AND eats salmon (probably avg once a week). They have seen significant improvements in acne and other skin issues since starting supplementation consistently. I can’t imagine how low it was before.

After seeing these my kids are more willing to take their omega 3 (but 2 of them still won’t eat fish). I think maybe I should start doing baseline levels on all patients because seeing alll that red motivates change. One kid even gave me the key to their candy drawer after seeing the high trans fats.

Our entire nation is deficient in Omega 3. Typically insurance won’t cover these tests, especially for screening. We have to take control of our own health. See links in comments for at home Omega Index and Vitamin D testing. Reach out if you need recommendations for a high quality supplement (studies show many products are rancid and full of mercury).

At least I’ve had their vitamin D levels (which were also in the basement) optimal for awhile now.
