Why I Wear a Back and Neck Brace — It’s All About Prevention

Hello everyone. I’m Dr. Sam Speron, a board-certified plastic surgeon in the Chicago area.
I get asked this a lot — yes, I do wear a back brace and sometimes even a neck brace during longer surgeries. But don’t worry, it’s not because I have any injuries or have had surgery. It’s purely about prevention and protecting my spine for the long run.
As surgeons, we spend hours standing in the same position, focusing intensely on precision and detail. That kind of physical strain can really take a toll on your neck and back over time.
I’ve seen too many colleagues develop chronic pain or posture problems after years in the operating room, and I decided early on that prevention is key.
Wearing a supportive brace helps keep my posture aligned and reduces unnecessary strain during those long cases. It’s a simple step that allows me to work more comfortably, stay focused, and continue performing at my best — both for my patients and my own health.
The same principle applies outside the operating room. Whether you sit at a desk all day, lift weights, or spend long hours on your feet, taking care of your posture and spine health is essential.
Supportive gear, stretching, and smart ergonomics go a long way in preventing issues before they start. It’s not about fixing a problem — it’s about avoiding one.
Prevention truly is the best medicine, and that’s something I practice every single day.
