Hope House Foundation

Hope House Foundation Hope House Foundation provides services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities The result was Hope House — Virginia's first group home. F.

In 1964, a group of parents in Hampton Roads came together to find an alternative to institutionalizing their adult children with developmental disabilities. By the Eighties, Hope House had 13 group homes throughout Hampton Roads. But by then, we had realized that the people we supported wanted something different. They wanted more privacy. More choice. And more opportunity to be a part of the com

munity — not segregated within a group defined by a shared disability. That's why today, we support adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities exclusively in their own homes or apartments. Our individualized service approach allows us to support people with a range of disabilities, in the way that's best for them. So while some receive intensive support, others just need occasional help with cooking, budgeting, or learning a new bus route. Over the years, our innovative, person-centered approach has garnered us a great deal of recognition. In 1995, our Executive Director, Lynne Seagle, received the Joseph P. Kennedy Foundation's International Future Leader Award — an honor previously bestowed on Mother Teresa and B. Skinner. In 2008, Hope House received the American Association for Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) national award for full community inclusion. And in 2012, the American Network of Community Options and Resources (ANCOR) gave Hope House its prestigious Community Builder Award. But of all our accomplishments, the one that makes us proudest is helping the people we support lead meaningful lives of their own choosing.

Their sacrifice reminds us of the importance of compassion, unity, and community — values we strive to carry forward every day.

Thank you to Pat Wheeler and the Cosmopolitan Club of Norfolk for inviting Hope House Foundation to your wonderful luncheon at the Norfolk Yacht Club!

Our team truly enjoyed the opportunity to connect and share more about our mission. Kim Rose, Development Coordinator, provided an overview of Hope House’s history and our ongoing fundraising efforts. Board Member Dorothy Clark spoke about her role on the board and about services Hope House provides to support individuals with developmental disabilities. Frances Ross, Hope House Thrift Shop Coordinator, gave an engaging look at our thrift shop—highlighting how community donations and shopping directly support our programs. She even brought along some fun items to showcase the diverse treasures you can find (and donate)!

We are grateful for the warm welcome, meaningful conversations, and the chance to meet so many wonderful members. Thank you again for the opportunity to share our mission!

Indian River Team Mini Retreat 2026

A day focused on breaking down barriers and building a stronger team through communication, teamwork, accountability, and support. From a fun scavenger hunt at the Norfolk Premium Outlets and lunch together to teamwork activities and time in the Destruction Room, the team came together to reflect, problem-solve, and create a new and improved blueprint for success.

We’re grateful for a team that continues to grow, support one another, and lead with heart. 💙
