HALO Program Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities

Since 2009, the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities has provided postsecondary opportunities to students ages 18-28 with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities. HALO students build personal and social skills through a balanced learning experience that includes reading, writing, math, and technology. We have been introducing the amazing people that make up the Heartland Community College HALO Team. Our final team member is Karin Orwig! Karin joined the HALO Team in 2023. She manages a lot of our program systems and is the point person for our families. Karin lives in Normal with her husband and their two teenagers. Her passions include travel, cooking, and reading. She also loves games and puzzles! Karin’s favorite thing about our HALO students is the joy that they bring to class every day!

Getting to campus just got easier for our HALO students with the Connect Transit Pontiac-to-Normal route! Stops include Heartland Community College Pontiac, Chenoa, Lexington and Towanda. Heartland Community College students can ride for free with a valid student ID. Free Wi-Fi is available onboard, making it easy to study or stay connected while traveling.

Meet student clubs, organizations, campus departments, and local community partners-all here to help you get involved and make the most of your Heartland experience. There will also be face painting, a balloon artist, Kevin the Caricature Artist, inflatables, a photo booth, live DJ, and yard games!

Get ready for Hawkapalooza Week of Welcome!

Students at the Normal campus can stop by the Heartland Quad today from 11AM-1PM for the Welcome Back Bash! Meet the Student Engagement team, connect with student leaders, play games, and enjoy a refreshing drink from the Freeze & Fizz Dirty Soda Trailer.

HALO classes will not be attending this, but students are encouraged to go on their own during lunch.
