HALO Program Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities

Since 2009, the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities has provided postsecondary opportunities to students ages 18-28 with intellectual, cognitive and developmental disabilities. HALO students build personal and social skills through a balanced learning experience that includes reading, writing, math, and technology. In addition, the program offers these students an opportunity to experienc

e life on a college campus while developing self-determination, independent living, and employability skills.

HALO students...guess what today is....It's Throwback Thursday!!!
Remember last fall visiting the campus Counseling Center to learn about the many free services and resources available to all students? During the tour, you explored ways to support your mental health and well-being while having plenty of fun along the way! Highlights included trying out the full-body massage chair (always a favorite!), creating artwork on calming Buddha Boards, and interacting with the Counseling Center’s adorable robotic pets. The visit gave you all a hands-on look at the resources available to help you stay healthy, manage stress, and succeed both in and out of the classroom! What was your favorite part of the visit?

The Penguin Project is an amazing not-for-profit organization that pairs artists with special needs with same-age peer mentors to create an annual theatrical production. Local community chapters across the country have been taking the stage for over 20 years. The Penguin Project of McLean County has featured many HALO students and graduates through the years, including their most recent production "The Addams Family." Thank you, Penguin Project, for giving our students a place to shine!
