If your cardiologist and your dentist have never spoken to each other, there is a significant piece of your health picture that nobody is looking at. π¦·
And I think it is one of the most important pieces we have been missing.
Research has found oral bacteria, specifically P. gingivalis, inside the arterial plaques of heart attack patients. We are talking about bacteria that started in the mouth, entered the bloodstream through inflamed gum tissue, and ended up contributing to cardiovascular damage. People with periodontal disease may have up to twice the risk of a heart attack compared to people with healthy gums. π
Now I always want to be responsible about how I talk about this, because association is not the same as causation. What the research tells us right now is that the connection is real, it is consistent, and it shows up across many large studies. That is enough to take seriously.
