🌙 Sleep Is Part of Your Body’s Housekeeping

What happens when you don’t get enough sleep?

Your body feels heavy.
Your brain feels foggy.
Your patience gets shorter.
Everything feels harder.

Then you finally get a truly restorative night’s sleep.

You wake up and notice it immediately.

Clearer. Calmer. More capable. More like yourself.

Sleep isn’t just “doing nothing.” While you sleep, your body is busy with repair, regulation, and maintenance. Your brain also has systems involved in clearing certain metabolic waste products.

At the Nourish & Renew weekend retreat, we’ll explore the body’s natural detoxification pathways—and one of the simplest ways to support your overall health: giving your body time to rest.

This weekend isn’t about doing more.

It’s about creating the space to let your body do what it already knows how to do.

🌙 Rest. Nourish. Renew.

☀️As summer winds down, take advantage of this beautiful weather to keep moving outside!

Try to move your body a little bit every day, even if all you have is 10 minutes. It's surprising how many benefits there are to a simple walk...clearing your mind, grounding your body, lowering your blood pressure while picking up the heart rate just a healthy bit ❤️, maybe some vitamin D, lubricating joints, reducing pain and tension, warding off cortisol, bringing on dopamine...

You'll notice the difference once you find your own rhythm: your body starts to crave movement...the rainy days might even make you a bit restless! 😉

💫 I love this advice. All of it.

I'm one of those people who can be over-stimulated easily, seemingly more easily than those around me. But I also don't spend a lot of time on devices, listening to music, or in loud places (like restaurants these days!). So maybe I'm just less acclimated to this new "norm" we're living in. For example, my mom's dishwasher beeps when you open the drawer. There's another beep if you open the fridge. 🤪 Why???

Our brains were not designed for this constant stimulation. You know what else is heavily impacted by all the "noise"? Your nervous system.

Your body has to take in, process, and digest not only what you eat, but everything you see, smell, taste, hear, think and touch. It has to determine what is nutritious and what is toxic. When you're in a state of constant stimulation, your body just doesn't operate at its best.

The activities on the below list help your body shift into the parasympathetic nervous system...which is what our body needs in order to calm down, think clearly, rest, digest, and heal. If we don't make that shift in the nervous system, we are creating a perfect environment for the inflammation response, sickness, overwhelm, anxiety and depression.

Move your body. Get outside. Breathe. Rest.
Eat real food...all the time.

I was so happy to see "hang out in book shops" was on this list!! 🥰

Science has already proven how powerful our mind can be.

Sometimes, when I'm feeling my mood take a turn, I notice a lot of negatives start popping up everywhere I look. 👀

One thing that really helps (and actually works faster than most tools I've tried!), is to re-frame the negative thought/situation/conversation so it has a positive spin.

🚗That traffic delay could prevent a close call down the road.

🍵The broken dish created space in the cupboard and I rarely used it anyways.

🦹‍♂️That small-talk conversation with a stranger made me late, but really got my wheels turning.

The most common re-frame I find myself making is to see a potentially negative situation as an opportunity to learn. That jaw-clenching experience may have just put me on a new, unexpected path ...and it may end up leading me right where I needed to be.

Next time you find yourself thinking darker-than-light thoughts, try to see it from another perspective...what is the universe teaching you this time? 💫

Every scenario can be an experience with the potential to change our track...that day or week or year.... but if we allow ourselves to get stuck in that cycle of our own negativity, we just might miss that ride.

If you've never tried meditation because you're intimidated by it, or think it doesn't work (there's tons of research on its health benefits!), or don't think you can do it...

Try adding an affirmation. It's just a little something you say in your mind (or out loud) to keep your brain focused. Keeping the brain focused on one thing is all you need to do. Well, that and breathe. Take those big, deep, belly breaths.

You can stare at the flicker of a candle, watch a leaf move with the wind, or close your eyes and repeat your affirmation.

Your affirmation phrase should be positive, encouraging, and/or motivating. It could also be something you need to be reminded of, such as you are loved, safe, or have good health or a home. The simpler, the better, especially when you are just starting out. Below are more ideas to get you started.

Don't feel like you have to meditate for 10 minutes. Try for 5, or 3. Maybe it brings up anxiety. So maybe just try for 1 full minute.

Give yourself some grace. Every little bit counts, and every effort of meditation will change your brain. Try again tomorrow, for another session of the same length. Building the time will come naturally. You just need to start.
