👟 2026 Walk Team Profile: Meet Steve’s Fan Club 👟

Nearly seven years ago, at just 38 years old, Steve Abendschein suffered a massive stroke that changed his family’s life. During those early, difficult weeks of recovery, the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey reached out to support Steve and his family and help connect them with resources.

Today, Steve has come so far, and his family is walking to celebrate his incredible progress and give back to an organization that was there when they needed it most.

Steve’s team includes his two sons, Liam and Kyle, team captain and wife Tara, and some of their biggest cheerleaders, friends Ed Boone and Rachel Delicate and their families.

To others thinking about starting a team, Tara advises, “Just start. Seeing the support from near and far is really rewarding, especially to those recovering.”

Steve’s Fan Club is already more than halfway towards their impressive $10,000 fundraising goal and looking forward to walking together in Paramus next month. “Steve is cool. Brian Injury is not,” said Tara. "We can't wait to show up and honor Steve, the hardest working guy we know."

Thank you Steve's Fan Club for your support of BIANJ’s Run/Walk/Roll for Brain Injury Awareness! To register and learn more about forming a team visit: https://support.bianj.org/2026walk

👟 2026 Walk Team Profile: Meet Ava’s Brainiacs! 👟

Just over a year ago, in June 2025, Ava Geissel sustained a traumatic brain injury in a car crash. Since then, recovery has been “a rollercoaster of highs and lows,” but through it all, Ava has remained determined to keep moving forward.

Now, she’s leading Ava’s Brainiacs to celebrate the progress she’s made and the incredible support system that has been by her side throughout her recovery, including her family, friends, and coworkers.

“BIANJ has been a helpful resource for me, so I’m excited to be part of this event,” Ava shared.

For anyone thinking about starting a walk team, Ava’s advice is simple: Start the team and get involved! Any and all support makes a difference.”

We’re excited to cheer on Ava and her team as they celebrate her progress, resilience, and continued recovery!

👟 2026 Walk Team Profile: Meet Jimmy’s Comeback Crew! 👟

On December 13, 2025, Jimmy sustained a severe brain injury and brain bleed after a devastating fall while dancing on his daughter’s wedding night. He underwent emergency brain surgery, suffered two strokes, and spent weeks in a coma. His family was given a 20% chance that he would wake up.

Today, Jimmy is home, talking, walking with a cane, and continuing to work toward greater independence. His progress has been remarkable, thanks to his determination and the incredible support of his family, friends, and medical team.

That’s why they call themselves Jimmy’s Comeback Crew. Led by Jimmy’s daughter, Courtney, the team includes Jimmy’s five children, his wife, extended family, friends, and many others who have supported him throughout his recovery.

"This walk is our opportunity to celebrate everything my dad has overcome while bringing awareness to an injury our family knew so little about until it became part of our lives," shared Courtney. "We hope that by sharing Jimmy’s story, we can bring greater awareness to brain injuries, support other survivors and their families, and remind people just how much hope, perseverance, love, and a strong support system can mean throughout recovery."

Their advice to anyone thinking about starting a team? "Do it! Forming a team is a small but powerful way to stand behind your loved one, celebrate their strength and progress, and show support for everyone living with the effects of a brain injury. You also never know who you might reach by sharing your story. If it helps even one other survivor or family feel a little less alone in what they are going through, it is worth it.”

We can’t wait to celebrate Jimmy and his incredible comeback!
