Every day, millions of seniors living in skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities depend on specialized long-term care pharmacies for far more than medication dispensing.
Long-term care pharmacies provide:
✅ 24/7 emergency medication access
✅ Clinical pharmacist oversight and medication regimen review
✅ Medication packaging designed for safe administration
✅ Daily coordination with nurses, physicians, and facility staff
✅ Regulatory compliance support
✅ Timely delivery of medications directly to the bedside
These services are largely invisible—until they are threatened.
Across the country, long-term care pharmacies continue to face increasing reimbursement pressure and contracting challenges with pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). These discussions are not simply about contracts—they are about ensuring that pharmacies can continue providing the specialized services required to care for our nation's most medically fragile residents.
The people who ultimately deserve our attention are not the contracting parties. They are the residents and families who depend on uninterrupted access to medications, and the healthcare professionals who care for them every day.
I appreciate the leadership of the Senior Care Pharmacy Coalition (SCPC) in advocating for policies that recognize the unique role of long-term care pharmacies and in calling for fair, transparent, and sustainable agreements that protect patient access.
As pharmacists, providers, payers, and policymakers continue these discussions, I hope we never lose sight of our shared responsibility:
Protecting continuity of care for vulnerable seniors.
Patient care must always come first.
