Many are concerned about losing muscle mass on a GLP1 medication. However, we have found that patients who prioritize proper protein intake do not have this problem!

If you look at the data across all weight loss approaches, the average muscle mass on a diet or medication equates to 25% (closer to 30% on a GLP1).

I have had patients lose 40-50 pounds of fat on a GLP1 without losing one pound of muscle, and others who may lose 5-10% of muscle (but who had a lot of extra muscle to spare, so as they lost weight, they simply didn’t need as much muscle to support their body habitus.

The key is proper nutrition and body composition monitoring, which we do here at Whole Heart Family Medicine.

This service is included for our members, but if you aren’t a patient, and want a body composition scan to track your muscle and fat loss over time, you can come by and get a scan for just $50. Just give us a call and we are happy to schedule you a nurse appointment!

There are many reasons someone may not tolerate a statin, but here at Whole Heart, our patients rarely have side effects from them. There is a genetic test we can order that determines how you metabolize statins, and whether you at increased risk of complications. This helps us know which statin and which dose is safest to use.

Have you had your SloCo1b1 test checked?

We love trying out new products and sharing with you new finds. I think this would be so good with vanilla ice cream (I love Nicks as a low carb sugar free option). Let us know if you try this out and like it! Link to buy in comments section.

Not all statins are the same.

Rosuvastatin (Crestor) is a water-soluble (hydrophilic) statin and is one of the most effective medications for lowering LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Because it is hydrophilic, some patients may experience fewer muscle-related side effects compared to fat-soluble statins.

Rosuvastatin is one of our favorite statins because it is highly effective across a wide range of patients, including those with certain genetic differences that can affect how other statins work. It is also less likely to lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol compared to some other statins.

Genetics can play an important role in how your body responds to cholesterol medications. For example, individuals with certain variations of the SLCO1B1 gene may have a higher risk of side effects when taking fat-soluble statins such as Lipitor (atorvastatin) or Zocor (simvastatin).

Studies have shown that rosuvastatin can provide significant cholesterol reduction and help lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular events when appropriate for the patient.

That said, the “best” statin is the one that is both effective and well-tolerated for YOU. Factors such as your cholesterol levels, cardiovascular risk, genetics, other medical conditions, and medication history all play a role in choosing the right treatment. 🩺🩵

Carlos’s is in the patient spotlight today! Carlos has established heart disease- he had a coronary stent placed in 2010, but even at 73 years old, that has not stopped him. Carlos has invested numerous hours of his time cycling over the last six months and made a 30% improvement in his Vo2 max! I typically shoot for 10% improvement as a general goal, and Carlos tripled that goal - this is phenomenal!

If you don’t already know, Vo2 max is the number one marker of longevity and health. The higher it is, the healthier you are, and more resilient to stress or illness. Sadly, this test is rarely done in a clinical setting.

At Whole Heart we order Vo2 max testing (with our CPET) on all of our patients, and then personalize their exercise goals to optimize these values. Want your Vo2 max tested? Just give us a call!

☀️ Sunscreen isn’t just for beach days—it’s one of the simplest things you can do to protect your long-term health.

Daily sunscreen use can help:
✔️ Reduce your risk of skin cancer
✔️ Prevent premature skin aging, including wrinkles, discoloration, and changes in skin texture
✔️ Protect against painful sunburns and UV-related skin damage

Did you know?
🔹 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70.
🔹 Skin cancer is becoming increasingly common in younger adults, with melanoma now one of the most common cancers among people ages 15-39.
🔹 Research shows that experiencing 5 or more blistering sunburns between ages 15 and 20 increases the risk of melanoma by up to 80% later in life.

Our recommendation: Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day—even on cloudy days.

Some of our favorite sunscreen brands:
☀️ EltaMD
☀️ La Roche-Posay
☀️ Blue Lizard
☀️ CeraVe
☀️ Colorescience

Many of these brands offer broad-spectrum protection, including mineral sunscreen options for those who prefer zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as active ingredients.

Let us know some of your favorite sunscreens below!!⬇️⬇️⬇️
