On Jan. 2, 1987, Jane gave birth to her son, Forrest. Shortly after came the birth of her business. While pregnant, Jane built her greenhouse, hoping to grow plants to sell at markets. After having Forrest, she realized that her path would be to create herbal products.

Her introduction to herbal products came through the need to stop her baby’s earaches. After the antibiotics the doctor prescribed didn’t work, Jane made mullein flower ear oil. Mullein happened to be blooming, and gone were the days of her baby crying with ear pain.

At this time, Jane had a small farm in Texas. She became certified organic (way before it was cool) and created her first products like the Rose Comfrey Cream and Lemon Lip Balm. Jane went around to natural products stores, bringing her charm and enthusiasm for herbs, earning her accounts. Her first account was Whole Foods in Dallas. This was the second Whole Foods, as they too were just starting out.

Happy Farm Friday! 🌾 This week we're spotlighting a salve built from botanicals we trust.

Our All-Purpose Salve blends comfrey, St. John's wort, calendula, burdock, echinacea, plantain, thyme, and sage — herbs chosen with the same care we've put into this apothecary for decades. Gratitude looks like a bag of reused packing materials. 📦💚

We believe caring for our customers and caring for our mother earth go hand in hand — and this week we're overflowing with gratitude for the local partners who make that possible.

A huge thank you to Grainery in Baraboo and Bekah Kate's for passing along clean, reusable packing materials so we can keep giving them a second life instead of sending them to a landfill. Every box, every bit of packing paper, every reused mailer is one less thing pulled fresh from the earth — and it's partnerships like these that make sustainability more than just a buzzword for us.

Speaking of which — shoutout to our shipping manager Amberly, who just wrangled our largest reclaimed-materials haul yet! She keeps our packing station running on reused and repurposed materials, and honestly, watching her make it work is a little bit inspiring.

Herbs teach us this lesson every season: nothing in nature is wasted — everything returns to the soil to nourish what grows next. We're just trying to run our business the same way.
