American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care (ACVECC)

American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care (ACVECC) Mission: To create and sustain the standards of excellence in veterinary emergency and critical care. Yes, they do have additional training!
(1)

A specialist in emergency and critical care is a specially trained veterinarian who is dedicated to treating life-threatening conditions. They must first be a graduate of a recognized veterinary school, then receive a minimum (or equivalent) of 3 additional years of intense training in emergency, surgery and critical care through completion of an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critic

al Care (ACVECC)-approved training program. This intense program is referred to as a “residency” in emergency and critical care and focuses on the most up-to-date techniques for diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening disease processes in an emergency, and for the critical time while the animal is recovering. The emergency and critical care residency is supervised by mentors who have been through similar training programs and are themselves board-certified Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC). Once the veterinarian has completed these years of specialty residency training, the individual must then pass a tough board -certification examination given by the ACVECC. Upon successful completion of the training and passing of the examination, the veterinarian is a Diplomate of the ACVECC, is termed a “specialist”, and is board-certified in veterinary emergency and critical care.

Why pre-hospital care is so important! We wish Newnew a quick recovery and thank the officers on Cape Cod.

On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, the Barnstable Police Department received a 911 call reporting a vicious dog attack at a home in Hyannis. The hysterical caller informed dispatch that a dog was violently attacking another dog inside the home.

Officers Brandon Sanders and Rebecca Tatzel-Mandel arrived on scene simultaneously and found the situation to be chaotic. Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel entered the home and located a severely injured pet dog in the kitchen. Officers immediately began administering lifesaving aid to the critically injured dog, named Rhonda. Officer Sanders returned to his cruiser to retrieve a medical bag, while Officer Tatzel-Mandel began assessing Rhonda’s extensive injuries.

Working together, Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel applied QuikClot and bandages to Rhonda’s most serious wounds in an effort to stop the bleeding and stabilize her condition.

The officers then coordinated with Sgt. Butler and Animal Control Officer Charles Lewis to arrange emergency transportation for Rhonda to an Animal Hospital for urgent veterinary treatment.

The following day, Officers Sanders and Tatzel-Mandel visited Rhonda at the hospital and found her in stable condition, thanks to their efforts and the emergency medical care provided by the veterinary staff.
