Recurrent bleeding after knee replacement can be frustrating for both patients and surgeons. In this case, angiography identified abnormal hypervascular tissue surrounding the prosthesis. After selective geniculate artery embolization, the abnormal blush resolved and the bleeding source was eliminated. A minimally invasive outpatient procedure performed through a tiny catheter, often allowing patients to avoid additional surgery.

GENICULATE ARTERY EMBOLIZATION CASE OF THE WEEK

This patient continued to experience painful episodes of bleeding after knee replacement surgery. Angiography identified abnormal hypervascular tissue surrounding the prosthesis (left image).

Using a tiny catheter, we selectively embolized the abnormal geniculate artery branches feeding the bleeding source. The result? Resolution of the vascular blush and elimination of the bleeding source (right image).

Recurrent bleeding and pain after knee replacement can be incredibly frustrating.

This patient underwent Geniculate Artery Embolization (G*E) — a minimally invasive procedure targeting abnormal inflamed blood vessels around the knee. Total procedure took 45 minutes without any incisions.

➡️ BEFORE: Significant vascular blush consistent with ongoing bleeding/inflammation
➡️ AFTER: Resolution of the blush following targeted embolization

Less bleeding. Less inflammation. Improved pain.

Long segment occlusion of popliteal artery, tp trunk and proximal peroneal artery in a patient with advanced gangrene.

This patient was not an open surgical candidate and came to us to try and save his leg.

Using advanced Endovascular technology (be back crossing catheter), our team was able to restore blood flow where traditionally this was impossible. We were able to give this patient a chance to save his leg where 5 years before this would not have been possible.
