September is National Recovery Month.

Recovery looks different for everyone, but it's built on the same foundation: hope, support, and access to effective care. This month, we recognize individuals in long-term recovery, the families who've supported them, and the treatment providers working every day to make recovery possible.

At Dominion Diagnostics, we're proud to support treatment programs with accurate, clinically actionable testing that helps inform care at every stage of the recovery journey.

Overdose prevention starts before an emergency occurs.

While awareness is important, prevention also means taking steps to reduce risk, increase access to care, and support evidence-based treatment for substance use disorders.

Overdose prevention strategies can include:
✔ Increasing access to treatment and recovery services
✔ Expanding access to naloxone
✔ Reducing stigma around substance use disorders
✔ Educating communities about overdose risks and prevention

This International Overdose Awareness Day, we recognize the importance of education, compassion, and evidence-based care in helping prevent overdose and save lives.

Sunday is National Grief Awareness Day.

Grief is a natural response to loss, but it doesn't always look the way we expect. It can affect emotional well-being, physical health, relationships, and daily routines.

For some individuals, unresolved grief can also contribute to challenges with mental health or substance use, making support and connection especially important during difficult times.

This Grief Awareness Day, we encourage compassion—for ourselves and for others who may be carrying a loss that isn't always visible.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available. Visit FindTreatment.gov to locate treatment and support resources in your area.

The illicit drug supply keeps evolving — and it's getting more dangerous.

DEA is reporting that fentanyl is increasingly being mixed with potent synthetic substances like xylazine, nitazenes, cychlorphine, and medetomidine — many of which are undetectable to the user and not approved for human use.

Why it matters:
✔ These substances can be significantly more potent than fentanyl, raising overdose risk
✔ They're often hidden in counterfeit pills or fentanyl powder without the user's knowledge
✔ Naloxone may not fully reverse their effects, complicating overdose response
✔ Some are linked to severe health impacts, from soft tissue damage to rapid respiratory depression

Awareness and evolving clinical vigilance remain critical tools as the drug supply continues to shift.

According to the DEA, fentanyl is responsible for nearly 70% of the more than 107,000 drug overdose deaths reported in the United States in a recent year. The DEA also reports that, for Americans ages 18–45, fentanyl overdose has become a leading cause of death.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is approximately 50 times stronger than he**in and 100 times stronger than morphine. Its presence in counterfeit pills and other substances continues to pose significant risks to individuals and communities nationwide.

Today, we recognize National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day by encouraging education, awareness, and open conversations about substance use. Understanding the risks can help save lives.

Back-to-school season is a great time to start the conversation.

As schedules, routines, and social circles change, children and teens may encounter new situations involving alcohol, va**ng, ma*****na, or other substances.

SAMHSA's "Talk. They Hear You."® campaign encourages parents and caregivers to talk with their children early and often about substance use. Research shows that parents have a significant influence on the choices their children make—even when it may not seem like they're listening.

Three tips for starting the conversation:
✔ Start early and keep talking over time
✔ Listen more than you lecture
✔ Set clear expectations about alcohol and drug use

You don't need to have one perfect conversation. The goal is to build trust and keep communication open.
